I have a 2005 Tacoma DCLB, while driving between 30 and 90 mph i hear a strange humming sound. I doesnt sound like the engine but more like from the wheel area. It is louder when i take my foot off the gas. I was told it was probably my differentials and that I just needed to change the fluid. I have done that and still getting the noise. any suggestions on what it could be and how i can fix it.

    Any help is appreciated

I don't think its wheel hum, I have the truck for 4 years now and have always put the same tires on. The noise started only about 6 months ago, It went away for the most part when i changed the rear differential fluid, I should say it got quieter, now its getting louder again.

gregman- how could i check the bearings or the drive shaft u joints with relatively inexpensive ? or do i have to take it in to the dealer?

    Thanks again

Check wheel bearings by jacking one of the front tires off the ground and trying to move the wheel assembly without shaking the truck. You shouldn't have any play in the hub, if you shake the wheel up and down or front to back, it should not move without moving the truck.

For the U-joints, get under the truck and see if there's any play across the u-joint. If the u-joints get really bad, you'll feel a 'clunk' when you put it in drive or reverse as the slack is taken up.

It could be the wheel bearings, and what Pugga said is correct. But i also wanted to add, in my experience with these taco wheel bearings, mine had no play but was still bad. There was some pitting that was forming in my passenger side front wheel bearing that would make a kind of grindy/hum noise that I bet is similar to yours. Which would account for why it was not loose but made the noise and i could also feel a vib from it at 20mph+

I have had this same problem for a while now. I have taken it to the dealer and they had the field rep out beacuse the technician didnt know where to look for the noise. The field rep told me to let it get worst so they can really dial down an area. I think that is a load of crap. But I got the front diff fluid changed and the transfer case, no change. but I did notice that where the CV joint goes into the diff there is alot more play on the drivers side then the passengers side. any ideas>

put it in 4WD and see if it still makes the noise. If it goes away then its the diff bearing from what I've read.

First thing coming to my mind, put it in 4WD, see if it goes away. Get it in ASAP before Toyota finds a way to blame it on you :)

Don't ask... lol been there done that.

I've got a noise that kinda sounds like this coming from the front drivers side. At slow speed it's kinda rhythmic, louder/softer then when I get to speed I can hear that it's there constantly when I drive past something solid. I need to get it looked at before it fails completely.

well sorry it has been awhile. But yet another fail by another dealer. they said it sounds normal. I am very certian it isnt. it happens between 15 and 35 mph. I am not in a position to start riping into things myself. Any suggestions? or how much it would cost just to get it done at a garage?

I had the same problem and needed to replace the left front bearing. Drives like a charm now.

I've got the same thing. Rhythmic humming that is loudest between 50 and 60 mph but I can hear it at slower speeds. Does not go away in 4WD.

So... anyone know if front wheel bearing are covered in the powertrain warranty? My regular warranty just expired (along with my payments) a couple months ago. Otherwise it looks like I'll have to brush off my mech skills and tear into it.

Well if you have a lift on the truck then nothing is warranty. if not then yes. Just failed again at another dealer. they said for sure it was the diff but would not reaplce under warranty due to the lift.

I recently began to feel a humming/vibration in the floor at about 65 mph. The feeling cycles on and off when I hold the truck at that speed, and I'm pretty sure it occurs at between 50 mph and 60 mph, just not as bad.

I have a bit of road noise from tires (Wrangler Duratracs), but this feeling is different.

There doesn't seem to be any grinding in the hub when I spin the tire with each side jacked up, and I don't feel any wiggling in the wheel when I pull top/bottom and side/side. Rotating the tires didn't help.

Could this rhythmic vibe still be due to a bad wheel bearing, despite my checks not showing anything?

FWIW, suspension is at stock height. I don't suspect the diff bearing to be an issue here, as I got rid of that when I lowered the truck to stock height many miles ago.
