should i use a lunch box locker in front or detroit trutrac????

IWell I got a buddy who bought a truck from me a 91 4x4. He built motor put 35 tires on it with 5.29 gears and put a lunch box locker in rear that someone gave him. Well his son drives this truck. And have had gears in it for 7 months maybe. About 3 weeks ago he broke teeth off the ring gear and pinion. He rebuilt and yesterday he was driving up driveway and it went pop and jumping. He took apart and found it stripped the teeth on axle and locker and broke teeth off ring gear and pinion and broke the axle I think. Wow what caused all that?? Well my question to y'all is a got a 00 Tacoma im getting parts to do gears and locker in. I already have 4.88 gears with solid crush sleeves and detroit for rear locker and was going to buy a lunchbox locker ( spartan) for front 7.5 ifs. But now im really wondering now after hearing his storytelling. Should I buy a trutrac detroit locker for front. I only want to do this one time! It will be a daily river with some weekend trails. Should I buy chromolly rear axles too and should I change cv's in front or will they be ok?

 

I have heard alot bad about this lunchbox lockers on internet don't matter brand I have seen either?

 

Personally, I wouldn't put any non-selectable locker in the front. It'll lock whether or not you want it to, and front IFS axles break too easily. A while back, a guy with a "lunchbox" front locker was posting up, asking why he kept breaking axles when he was unloading his rig from the trailer in the parking lot...

"Lunchbox" locker vs. e.g. Tru-trac affects the strength of the differential itself, but not the locking behavior and the stress on the IFS axles.

As always, this is just advice from the internet, and your mileage may vary.

 

+1 There's a good reason why vehicles come from the factory with either selectable front lockers or LSD's rather than a non-selectable locker.

 

If your gonna put in a front locker go with the proven best... Aussie FTW! I have a aussie in the front of my taco with 35s no broken cvs yet, but i carry spares. I also have manual hubs so i can unlock them when im not wheeling and it doesnt cause extra wear and tear on ring and pinion/locker. People will say dont do it but for me id rather have a locker up front than in the back.

 

And to answer your other questions, no need for chromolly rear axle shafts i ran 37s on a elocker axle and only snapped 1 ever. Also dont change cvs check boots if cracked and worn replace boots and try to find one if not 2 trail spares. you didnt list your tires size or lift so thats all the help i can give you.

I would go with the trutrac, i know a guy who had that in the front of his standard cab taco, 3 inch lift on 35's and he liked it alot, almost as good as a true locker in everything as long as you have some gas/brake pedal coordination if you lift a tire. He went from a lockrite to the detroit and was happy he made the change.

Do yourself a favor and ditch that 3in body lift. Tacomas are notorious for rolling you dont need to add to that with 9in of lift with 35s. Not being a dick just giving some valuable information that might save your life one day.

well technically the gears he was running was fine for his application. A 91 has either a 22r or 3.slow in it. Put that with 35s and your sucking for power 5.29s where correct. So let me try to decipher this story your buddy's kid broke the ring and pinion on the truck( no suprise here kids DO NOT take care of vehicles). Your buddy attempted to rebuild it himself and replaced the ring and pinion and the next day it all came apart again? Sounds to me like piss poor installation. Installation is the key to survival of gears no matter locker or no locker if you set it up wrong or "close" then your asking for trouble. When the rear end blew up the first time did he make sure to remove all the crap out of there? Did he check the crosspin for and cracks or the carrier for cracks? IDK the entire cicumstances just putting out what i know about gear installs.

improper setup not enough pinion depth. You can tell casue the pinion is not even damaged and the ring teeth are all broken on the edge. I bet that thing was making all kind of noise.
either that or those gears are cheap ass ebay ones....
Tell your buddy to look up trail gear creeper gears(same as yukon) they have a warranty. Take them to a professional or someone who will give a warranty. I paid 200 install and the guy gave me the same warranty as the gears against installation defects which is good since the damn pinion seal is leaking and he needs to redo it.
