I don't understand why I'm getting such awful mileage.

OP, have you actually tried to manually calculate MPGs? Fill up, track mileage, then fill up and divide miles by gallons?

I wonder if it will match what scanguage says.

 

255/85/16's km2s on heavy steel wheels and driving normally net me about 14mpg city and 16 highway

Just cleaned my throttle body and MAF, hoping for improvement.
I'm on fuelly; handle is tombiosis. I'm getting 14.6 L/ 100km's...roughly 15mpg. Running 265/75/16 BFG AT's, AFE Pro Dry on a K&N intake.
OP, definitely clean the TB and MAF...don't over oil that filter or you will screw up your MAF...

 

Mine has about 30k on it. have been thinking I should clean the MAF as I've been running a TRD intake for like 10k miles, maybe that might get me a 1/2 mpg better

 

285 MT's here. Double Cab 4.0 Average 325 miles per tank. 18.5 mpg last tank.
Mostly highway miles. 110 mile roundtrip commute daily.

 

I drive mine like an old lady. 265s, 5100s, 98% city driving. Best i get was 14.6 worst, i get was 13.1.

 

man that sucks for all the guys getting that low of mpg.

i have a 3" with 275/70R18 (33.2") Duratracs and just got 305 before filling up, and it was partially delivering pizza around town. i calculated mine 17.3 . I have the AFE ProDry CAI and always get service on schedule. might look into that.

My experience with mileage is similar. I'm wondering if maybe my O2 sensors are going bad. I've got 70k Km's on the truck. I've also recently switched to premium with results no better than regular.

 

I get 14.5 mpg, I blame it on the terrain of where I live. It cost me $40/week to go to work and I only live 15.5 miles from work.

 

How? When my 6 speed was bone stock I was averaging 19.5 MPG everywhere I went. Including going up and down mountains everyday. Now that I am running 285's I am getting about 16.5 to 17 MPG

 

I am going to point out the elephant in the room.
Non-stock size tires need speedometer calibration.. Just want to make sure we cover that and that odometer is recording accurately.

I think that has already been covered. Everyone should know that when you put a 70+pound tire on you are going to lose some MPGs. As far as the calibration that isn't necessary. Adding larger tires isn't going to mess with the odometer any but it will cause the speedometer to read incorrectly.

You are correct, most people do not account for tire size...That being said, tire size calculations only make a 10 mile per tank difference, or approx .4 mpg in my case which isnt enough of a variance to explain the drastic differences in MPG some of us are getting... I've owned an 07, an 08 and a 2010. All were 4x4. all have the same tire and wheel setup. The 07 was an auto DCLB and got at best 325-330 on a tank all highway once it was broken in at 20k miles, most tanks averaged 280 or so. The 08 was an access cab stick with the TRD SC and I got about 300 on a tank driving like grandma mostly highway, most tanks of mixed driving were around 230 or so, and the 2010 is a SC'd auto DCLB which gets an average of 240-250 mixed driving, all highway I'll get around 300 if I do 65 MPH... I had an opportunity to play with different speeds per fillup all highway on a trip to florida last year. There are people out there with 6 speeds getting 19 and 20 MPG mixed driving. Somethings definitely wrong here...

 

averaged 19.6 mpg on the last two tanks of gas. Mixed driving hwy and town without hard acceleration. My truck is a stock dbl cab with sport pkg, 17 inch wheels, and ~1400 miles.

 

I have about 3200 miles on my 2011 TRD Sport Double Cab. I check the mileage at every fill-up by dividing miles by gallons.

The best I've seen is just under 18mpg. Worst is around 16mpg.

In CT, when it's cold I start the truck for a few minutes before I drive it, add to that the winter gas, I'm hoping in the Spring to be closer to 19/20 MPG.

 

2007 DC w/ 6" procomp lift & running 33x12.5 tires...towed a few thousand pound trailer over the weekend and burned a tank of fuel in 215 miles.... an $87.00 dollar tank of 87 regular gas to be exact!.... thats slightly over 10 MPG! FML!!!!!

You guys are missing something here. If your tires are different from stock then your odometer reading is incorrect. I don't know if you can set your tire size in the scanguage. Here's what I mean.

Your odometer is calculating miles by wheel rotation correct? So if you have 265/70r16s then your tire circumference is about 96 inches. so your computer measures distance by counting rotations and multiplying by 96 inches. Correct me here if I am wrong.

So if you're running 285s then your tire circumference is about 104. So your truck's computer is thinking your going 96 inches for every tire rotation but in actuality its going 104 inches. So this means you are traveling farther than your odometer says you are. So if you calculate MPGs then it will be lower than it actually is. By about 8%.

 

I see what you are saying but here is a counter point. If what you stated above is true, then every single lifted truck has actually has more miles on it than the odometer says it does?
