Black Smoke 4.0?

My 06 4.0 Prerunner has a little thing it does that i'm confused about. Occasionally one of my buddies will drive behind me and tell me my truck black smokes like a diesel. I have no cats and a cherry bomb extreme muffler, but other than that my engine mods are minor things like intake and such. The truck doesn't use oil, it doesnt leak oil. I just have no idea why it black smokes. Anybody know?

 

You sure it's smoke and not just condensation from everything being cold? On a cold morning, mine will blow vapor for a good 20 miles.

 

Ive been told by several of my friends thats its black clouds, the things only got about 94k miles. Plus theres black soot on my exhaust tips

 

So it's really nothing to be worried about?

 

And since my cats are just hollowed out, could there be soot buildup in them?

 

Wire a spark plug into the exhaust and make that bitch spit fire

Hey now, just cause its nearly straight piped doesn't mean it doesn't have an awesome tone, deep tone but loud as can be! You'd just have to hear it in person.

 

Straight piped does sound bad, but mine isn't. Cherry bomb extreme paired with the big tips makes it sound right. The sound produced by the muffler is just made deeper by the tips, same principal as putting big tips on a diesel truck, sound gets deeper. Ima post pics of my exhaust set up when i get home later.

Sounds like you are running way to rich. That should happen just a little bit with out a cat. The only time I have ever seen that happen on a gas motor is when someone is running a 11.2/1 afr with no cat. And even then, it's not that much. I would check your throttle body for any kind of carbon build up. Clean it, and run some chevron through the tank. Take it on the highway, and get them RPM way up for long period of time. Cleans out carbon build up, and self cleans. . If the problem still continues, I would be performing a injector balance test.

 

for some reason, all tacomas run rich, look at the carbon build up on exhaust tips even w/ all 4 cats. I had carbon buildup on mine after about 2 months. Im sure them not being in the way only aggrivates this "issue"
