Oil in coolant with only 3,000 miles on the clock

Went to swap out the FF oil for synthetic today. Noticed the puke tank had a good amount (1/16") of oil floating in it.

Now, I know oil+coolant is generally a sign of a HG leak. But this is a NEW truck (my first new vehicle, ever). Not really supposed to have HG problems.

I'll be taking it to the stealership in another couple thousand miles for its free service. Obviously I'll be having them look into this. In the meantime, a question:

Wtf would cause this on a new motor? Should I be looking at something other than the HG? Should I be worried about other problems? Should I go ahead and poke around for other problems?

 

if you think head gasket is leaking why would you even wait to get it checked out? maybe its just machining coolant left from the manufacturing process

 

id be going back there tomorrow. Waiting could cause you a catastrophic failure.

I wouldn't wait a few thousand miles. I would head straight to the dealership with the oil in the coolant over flow and have them run a diagnostic.

Lemon's do pop up in mass production. Have it checked out ASAP.

 

Coolant in your oil will eat bearings. I'd get back down there ASAP.

Hell no! Once it gives you a serious problem it will never b the same nor will you look at your cheating truck the same way again, lol.

 

Seriously doubt machining oil. I've been under the hood a few times in the month I've owned it, and this is the first time I've seen oil+coolant. If it was machining oil, I would suspect I would have caught that in my overly-thorough 40-minute inspection when I went to pick it up......especially considering it had 160 miles on it by that point.
Part of me says to take it in right this minute, part of me says wait 'til the 5K service and play dumb. I guess considering the wife still has another couple weeks left on maternity leave, now might be the time to do it.

Any thoughts on the problem being a leaky oil cooler, or something similar?

If you take it in for the 5000 mile service and mention that you saw oil in the coolant, then later down the road the motor blows due to a leaky head gasket, you have on record that you saw symptoms of a leaky head gasket early on under the warranty period so they should cover it.

Take it in.

 

That's a possibility. The oil cooler is the donut piece sandwiched under the oil filter. It is relatively easy to replace.

 

I would take it in asap.

The TW account is not casually traceable to Mach375's real name, address or VIN. Of course, all records are subject to discovery if this ever explodes into a lawsuit with millions of dollars at stake. For now it's not a practical concern.

The oil cooler is perhaps equally susceptible to leakage, for it is likely an outsourced item, while the engine assembly is subject to Toyota's direct quality control. Doesn't make the problem any less severe, so yeah, take it to a dealer quick.
