Been really busy lately but I'm gonna try and make that trip.

Well looks like a negative on the being in town this weekend and next weekend is a no go either since I work next sat :/

Ok folks Colin and I are looking at trails for the weekend. Wanted to give everyone some options and get opinions. I think everyone is planning on arriving on Sat and camping that night correct? The trail Im looking at will take us up Monticello Canyon with the option of going to see the Very Large Array. According to google maps this will take about 4.5-5 hours (about 100 miles total), but due to photo shoots, bathroom and leg stretching breaks Im sure it will end up being a 6-8 hour trip. Going up the Canyon is about 33 miles, then its another 40 or so miles to the VLA. Once at the VLA we can take 60 back to the interstate and depending on what day we do the run, head to the Lake or home. We always have the option of just doing the Canyon trail and then heading back to lake or home as well. Let me know what you think.

awsome info colin! huge thanx for the effort! looks to me like the 2wd folks can do that run judging from the included pics on the trail report. looks beautiful up there and the VLA has my interest pegged.

we had plans to meet sat am about 10:30 at the walmart in t or c.

 

That was all matt with all that good info. Thanks matt! I like the whole Vla trip idea. Plus it looks good for the 2wd like you said and cool water crossings. Then we can also do some cool stuff around the lake. What do you guys think?

 

If we are meeting up at 10:30, thats going to push getting up to the VLA between 4-6:30 pm. That will be putting us back at the lake around 6-8:30pm. Who is planning on camping? I may have to leave my camp set up since Im wanting to camp both nights. Colin, where are you camping?

 

I'm not sure yet. I will either stay at my dads down the street or maybe with some friends renting a trailer from base.

Now as far as trails and stuff I'll try to find out how long it's going to take to the antennas and how hard it's going to be.

KEEP IN MIND TIME CHANGES THAT SUNDAY SO WE GAIN A EXTRA HR OF DAYLIGHT!

 

I'm so excited!! Do you think we are going to need a gas can with extra fuel? I will take some two way radios just so I can communicate with the rest of you. Tom and I at least are meeting at the tans mountain shell off I-10 on Saturday at 8. So I guess from there we can meet up with anyone else in torc and head out to find a camping spot....

 

if theres a need to meet in torc earlier, im good with it. just tell us what time is nessesary keeping in mind we probably want to set up camp before the drive to the VLA. im assuming its safe to leave it there but i may be dead wrong. the other options are to leave from walmart to the VLA and set up camp after we return or hang at the lake all day saturday and pack up sunday then hit the trail. its cool with me either way. what say you?

and sorry for givin colin all the credit matt. i obviously wasnt payin attention. doh!

 

the more i think on it the more sense it might make to meet at wallyworld sat mornin, hit the trail to the VLA from there and do the camp thing that night and sunday like you say. that reduces the chance of breakin up the caravan. matt may also have a point about getting there before 10:30 if it means making camp at 8pm. being a rookie here, im open to whatever you experts say.

 

at least 1 of us has bone stock 2wd prerunner but ive got some driving talent. another has a stock turd sport and can shoot her way outta most any bad situation.

ive got 4 of those motorola talkabout radios with up to a 5 mile range if i remember it right. pretty popular radios so maybe we will get lucky and everyone can plug into a channel and talk at each other. they even match yer truck val!
