if it is more than just some type of antenna, someone educate me on what this "shot spotter" is. it sounds interesting.

If it's what I think it is, its used to detect gunfire. It alerts dispatch of gunfire, and gives them the location within a couple hundred yards.

The idea behind them is that it cuts down on the number of incidents of gunfire that go un-reported or un-addressed by the police.

It was tried down here in Pompano Beach, an insanely drug and violence ridden community that has shootings on a frequent basis, and they often are not reported. Problem with it was that it registered other sounds than just gunfire, so it raised false alarms, and when it did work properly, the shooters were still able to get away, unless there was a deputy in the area.

We don't have them here, but I have heard about them. You would be surprised how many shots fired do not get called in. People don't want to get involved and bad neighboroods are so used to it, they just let it go.
