Unless it's prohibitively difficult- Why WOULDN'T you follow the manufactures recommendations??

It won't catastrophically implode or anything....but it's prolly a good idea.

Wow it's 2009 and there's a million threads on this exact topic dating back to 2005 and yet still the debate goes on. Unbelievable.

How often do you normally use the 4 wheel drive? I know I usually use mine several times a month so I dont have to worry too much about making sure it gets used or not....thats why I have the 4x4. If I didnt need it I would have gone the pre-runner route and been more than happy with saving a couple thousand.

I wheel two or three days over a two month period right now-I'm busy with work. Once I have my lift installed- It'll be two days a month at least.

I like knowing that I have it for wherever I might end up (Military transfers and all)

When in 2wd mode, the front hubs are "unlocked" so the the front axles and front differential are not turning. If yours are turning then your hubs are faulty which will cause premature wear and poor gas mileage.

All the oil eventually drains back into the bottom of the differential thereby leaving the front drive components exposed to possible condensation or "RUST".

The manual says 10 miles a month but I think thats excessive in my opinion. A 1/2 mile or mile will churn all that oil up and do the job.

Not in these trucks, the front drive axles move with the tire and are powered when 4wd is activated, the hubs do not completely unlock
