im looking into getting new tires. I have whatever stock specialized tires the bike came with, they are pretty knobby and are 26X2.10.
The trails here are mostly hard packed single track with some fine/loose gravel in places, there are lots of small to medium roots that cross the trails as well. Any recomendations?

I had Maxxis High Roller tires before and after they worn out I replaced them with Panaracer Fire XC's Kevlar bead. I was happy with both, but I'm no tire expert by any means. I've noticed the Fire XC's tend to sometimes pick up particular size of small rocks and throw them at my feet which is anoying. I've ridden borrowed bikes with tires I did not like as much so makes me appreciate my past two tire choices.

I was thinking about getting a tighter tread pattern for the front and a knobbier tire for the rear. idk why but it seems legit to me? haha

Thats a sick set up with the float 36 180 up front.....however the drivetrain doesn't really fit with the rest of the bikes build.

I just use a hitch mount rack for 4 bikes. I regularly see them go for $50-$100 on local classifieds. However, I'm thinking you would prefer something that will keep your bike out of the elements as you suggested fitting under your besttop. I guess I'll wait then to see what others have to say. I haven't ever seen that particular setup before. Interesting...

I might just end up making something if I don't wanna spend any money.

Ultimately I'd like to keep my bikes in the bed because I don't have anything hanging off of the back

I would go with Kenda Nevegal 2.35 up front and a 2.1 in back. This will still roll plenty fast and have good grip ;).

    Yeah.
You'd have to have a long bed for the bikes to fit this way. If you do, cutting a 2x4 slightly wider than the inside of the bed and jamming it down in there with your foot would work with a $12 eBay fork mount. You'd have to put it a little ways back to get clearance for the handlebars, but it might work -- it would be tight, though.

    Yeah.
Check out the Maxxis Ignitors, you can do 2.35 front and 2.1 rear, and they are a little narrower than the Nevegals (the Nevegals run a little big). I ran Nevegals on my freeride big-travel bike for the gnarly stuff, Ignitors on my all-arounder. The WTB ExiWolf might also be a good choice. I'm running Bontrager XR4 tubeless now, but I may switch back to Ignitor or Nevegal tubeless next time around, those seem to be my favorite 2. For how you describe your terrain, I would lean toward the Ignitor.

bone stock save for the block lift that came on it with the open country m/t.
All the time, but I always tell someone where I am going (the wife) and it's not like I go so far out into the sticks that I cannot contact someone.

I took a wrong turn once. Ended up at the bottom of a hill-and for little while, i had no clue where I was. A wee bit of panic set in as it got darker
Then I hit the road and had a climb back to the truck
