what to use to protect paint under the doors

What product are people using to protect the paint underneath their doors from rock chips? I guess sliders would work to a degree but I on't have the cash for them yet. Does 3M adhere well to the rockguard that they have down there?

 

I don't have a need for sliders so I went with side steps and kept the mud flaps in place. The paint seems to be holding up pretty well so far. If you want a coating, I'd look into bedliner. Line-X has a color matched bedliner so it wouldn't look too bad and would provide great protection.

 

I am using Mud Flaps and Nerf Bars and seems to be working.

 

The Line-X website is not very informative.

Do they carry a clear-coat spray for this type of application? Are these sprays in the bedliner section?

Line-x has a UV additive to prevent it from fading. It's basically a thick paint, it cures itself if it gets dinged (to an extent, obviously there are limits to this). Line-X is most commonly known as a bedliner. There are other options but as far as I know, Line-X is the only one that color matches.

I'll post back with pictures of someone who coated their entire truck with the stuff.

False...there is a spray shop near me that does Rhino linings and they can do color match as well...

 

I stand corrected! I didn't know anyone else was was color matching. Good to see Line-X has some competition now!

 

good product, there is another spray shop local that does color match too, with more of a rubbery feel, the line-x i had in a previous truck was rough stuff, but a good product none the less!!! actually been thinking about getting my BSP lined along the bottom.

You can't do Line-x yourself, a dealer will have to apply it for you. No clear coat, it's a 2-part coating that cures hard and durable. There's an option to get a UV protectent which I'm not sure if it's mixed in with the color or if it's sprayed on top. Even without the UV protectant, Line-X is very tough stuff.

Also, you don't have to color match it. You can get one of their standard colors. Color matching would be more expensive but, if you want to keep the stock look but have something durable, I was throwing it out there as an option.

I've used it for all kinds of applications (including the door sills). It's transparent and available in different thicknesses. Apply it on a dry day with an ambient temp greater than 50 so it's more pliable and sticks. You need to press it and get it to adhere. The good news is you can cut it with scissors to any size or shape for corners, etc.

I like the tape idea. I wonder how well it seals to an uneven surface like the rock guard.

 

Good question. I'll give it a test and report, then there's also the question about how it'll hold up over 4 seasons. More news as I test it.

On a flat surface... I have some on one my cars and it's held up for 2 years.

Me thinks the guy you talked to was being lazy and miquoted you... that sounds pretty ridiculous!

 

Linex here quoted $1000 to go all the way around, I little less for just rocker panels and $150-250 to do sliders ( said they'd have to see them ) I said never mind

I got my bed sprayed with Line-X for $450 out the door. I'm also in So Cal too, so not sure if that is why I got a decent deal.

 

1300 is crazy, even for CAD. should be closer to 600 CAD I would think. even then its really expensive. Id rather get sliders at that cost!

 

I bought this stuff from cabelas a while back with my discount, but have not gotten around to putting it on. Has anyone had any luck with this stuff?
