Nice work on your shoot Jake!

Anyone see the new Canon flash? The new '600 is also available for pre-order from B&H.

I was reading a piece on promoting yourself and came across this video from Josh Letchworth. It's about a newsprint "portfolio" of sorts. http://vimeo.com/32406987

It's a part of the No Plastic Sleeves blog which talks about making portfolios. There's even a book the blog goes with.

I agree with some of the blogs points. Specifically about separating yourself from others in a unique way. That newsprint portfolio is a great example. Teaming up with a great designer to help with look and feel is also a good idea.

Overall, a great piece and worth a look.

That is awesome Ian. Thanks for sharing! I have already shared that with the fellow students I go to school with as we are Graphic Designers and this applies to us just as much as photographers! Really good concept here, and ideas for separating yourself.

In the past, that kind of self promo would have been a lot harder. But you can make a pretty dynamite one-off book for a very reasonable sum these days. Just a few years ago, that wasn't possible. Assuming you were up and coming today, a portfolio you could leave with a client would have more impact than anything you could show and take away (I'd only leave them with very important clients). Plus, you can afford to produce several versions depending on your target market.

It's a pretty amazing time we are in right now.

I've actually heard good things about Radio Poppers. Not bad for the price. I went the extra mile with the PocketWizards mainly cause I'm a "go big, or go home" kind of person.

The thing about RP's is if you're solo, probably OK. Working with others is going to be a crap shoot tho and that's why the PW's rock (one of the reasons).

Any suggestions for a zoom lens? I have a canon 60d with the nifty 50 and 18-135. I want something i can shoot wildlife and sports with. I want to stay around $800. I can't justify dropping $1200 right now on a lens for a hobby i'm just getting into.

vibration reduction basically. It helps with camera shake. The only time you have to worry about it is when your shutter speed is low compared to your focal length.

ie. shutter speed of 100 when your zoomed to 200mm you will probably see a little motion blur unless you have OS/IS/VR whatever you want to call it.

But if you keep your shutter speed higher than your focal length (ie. shutter speed 300 @ 200mm) you should have no problems.

    x2

when i got my start, my agent had 5 copies of my portfolio in 11x14 matte prints in standard heavyweight leather bound books... the book alone was about $275 each, and the prints were $15 each with 20 prints per book...

    so figure, $575 x 5 books

then, factor in the agency monogrammed shipping cases for each book...

then, i had to shell out another $5,000 to a web design company to build and manage my website...

now, i have my current portfolio on my iPad, and for submissions, i just mail out picture discs...

    soooooooooooooo much easier now...

70-300mm f/4-5.6 USM is a great lens. I use it for exactly what you are going to be doing. Its great and only around $600.

    I want a nifty 50.....

What does everyone think of the 5D3? I can't wait to try it out, just a little(a lota) out of my price range...

honestly i think it looks great. canon added a lot of great things to their new cameras, (1dx, 5d3, g1x) i really like the new lineup (and thats coming from a die hard nikon shooter :p )
