Tundra vs Tacoma-Help

I'm at the point where I'm trying to make up my mind weather to buy a new Tundra or to keep my Tacoma. My Taco is a 2010 with 58,000 miles on it. It's a double cab with V6, 4x4 and tow package. I do tow my 18 ft boat and my 19 ft Airstream Bambie with the Taco. In the near future I plan to drive the Alaska Canada Hwy pulling the Bambie but I'm really concerned about the length of the trip with the 6 cylinder engine. I have encountered some really long uphill mountain crossings in BC while towing my boat and it seemed to stress the engine. I mean some stretches I was going in 2nd gear and some the truck wanted to go into first. My boat weighs about 2800 pounds and the TT is 4500 pounds. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I drive a 2010 Tacoma and wife has a 2007 Tundra...Tundra is VERY powerful and roomy but corners like a Rhino (Picture a rhino trying to bang a 90 degree at a full sprint) and is harder to fit in smaller parking spaces...Gas mileage should also be a consideration at this point in time...my 4x4 gets a few MPG better than the wife's 2x4....I can't speak to the towing issue...haven't done much with either vehicle...

 

The Tacoma is fine for what you are towing, since you have the tow pkg.

If this trip is a once in a lifetime trip, you could just rent a larger truck for that one instance.

 

If you like the Taco, keep the Taco. It will do fine for a one-time trip like that.
If you want a Tundra and need an excuse to get a Tundra, get a Tundra.

The Taco is fine for the occasional (non-daily) towing you are talking about. The Tundra will do it too, but you will be driving the monster all the time, not just when you "need" it.

I would not hesitate to tow the boat with my 4cyl on a regular basis. I would probably not do a major trip with the Travel Trailer, but I would tow it a few hundred miles without worrying about it.

 

Well of the reasons you have I wouldn't buy a tundra. One time trip not a big deal. Just service every fluid before going. A tune might help a bit also

My parents got just got a Double Cab Tundra with the 5.7 and Tow Package. Talk about coolers galore (transmission, engine oil, and power steering)....

That truck can haul a**. The Tacoma is pretty powerful enough as it is, but whenever I drive their Tundra its so much smoother, and the power of the 5.7 with 4.3 gears is phenomenal . It's like our Tacos on steroids, it's HUGE and it can be harder to park and get out of tight spaces.

 

How about a regear for the Tacoma? I will eventually move to 4.10's myself. It should help in the seat of the pants feel.

 

Install 4.10 gears in Tacoma for the trip and it will pull 6500 lb up the mountain on 5th gear

 

I traded my 08 tundra 5.7 for my 2.7ltr taco 4x4 and never looked back. Tundra is a beast but the gas milage was killing me. Also for off roading the tacoma is a much better truck due to its size and weight
