Only 1 HID fog light working.

Installed a set, however the one side will only work sometimes. I have searched on here and found conflicting information. I do have DRL's and I have done the foglight on anytime modification. Someone mentioned adding a separate relay from the battery to the fogs is the only option because the DRL's interfere with ballast getting powered on.

For the guys who have HID foglights, what did you do?

 

Not sure. Did it work when you first wired it? Those things are horrible for blowing ballasts and having loose connections. Check all the connections. When I did mine the wire into tr ballast was loose. I had to open it up and do some soldering works good now. I'm an electrician so I should be able to help take some pics of how you wired it if you can if you can figure it out I'll be able to see what's wrong or should be at least

 

Relay could help however I would think both lights would have issues if that were the case

 

switch one ballast to the other bulb, and connect them. If the same bulb doesnt turn on, then its the bulb that out. If the other light doesnt turn on, then its the ballast that is bad.

Otherwise, there maybe a loose connection.

Diagnosing these things isnt all that difficult, just work from one end of the system to the other. Do you have a multimeter?

 

I have a 2011 and all I did was wire them up. Didn't nee anything else.

Make sure you connections are not swapped.. Maybe you have the pos/neg flipped?

I'd start swapping parts from the working to the non-working side and see what the issue really is.. might just have a bad ballast/bulb.

 

Ye probably the best way to trouble shoot it. If you plan on Doing lots of work yourself it's worth to buy a multimeter. Makes trouble shooting way easier

 

Do you have daytime running lights?

I do have a multimeter, what did you guys have in mind on what to test?

 

I was looking on ebay in case I do need to add a relay harness, and here is what I came across on one sellers listing:

"HID Battery Relay will not fix DRL (Daytime Running lamp) issues with your HID kit because of how the DRL is programmed to work within your cars electric system. DRL lights work at a lower resistance and voltage therefore do not have enough power to light up the HID kit completely. Once you turn your HID kit on the DRL will remain lit and create voltage and resistance problems to your hid kit and therefore either your kit wont turn on or it will flicker. The only way to fix your DRL problem is to bypass the DRL or disable the DRL lights completely off."

 

Just wanted to give a quick update in case anyone ever stumbles across this in a search when they are troubleshooting. The seller sent me a new ballast and that has solved the problem. HID fog lights will work with no modification for those of us that have DRL's.
