So... is the UWS box worth it?

I mean, for $400, is it really worth it? Seems a little steep for a box. I can't find anyone local with a used one. Lowes has a Kobalt box that is flimsy. I've never seen the UWS in person.

    Looking for unbiased opinions.

Maybe expand your Craigslist area some? I see tons of boxes all the time in my area for cheap.

The closest is in Mississippi, over 3 hours away. The gas would make it more than the buying new.

You mentioned the cheap Lowe's box yourself. How much was it, under $300? So you know right off the bat that the price on a quality box is going to be more. Weatherguard is considered to be the premium top-notch box that all companies compare to. Their "budget" box is more than $500.

UWS is a great compromise in terms of quality material and construction. So yes, $400 is worth it.

My old truck, that has since been passed down to my son, has a "Delta" box on it. Despite my constant tinkering with the latch pins and strategic placement of weather stripping the lid & latching mechanism rattles. It serves its purpose of keeping things out of the cab, dry, and somewhat secured so I lived with it thinking, “Well, it’s a tool box”.

When I bought my Tacoma it had a UWS box on it and what a difference! That thing was solid, no rattles, latching mechanism operated smoothly, lid closed without a lot of effort, had 2 air lift shocks instead of the 1 the Delta had. It was certainly a much better box. Did it hold my stuff any better than the Delta? Nope; things stayed just as dry and probably as secure. But if I were in the market for another tool box, I’d buy the UWS... not new though, they’re expensive. I’d shop Craigslist. Be patient & keep looking, you'll find one.

Very happy with mine. Nothing flimsy about it. I looked at some that were junk for not that much less money. Lid it insulated and solid. Does not tweak at all when closing from side of truck. IMO, you generally get what you pay for. Good luck!

Got a UWS and no complaints. Worth it for a great product and the lack of problems.

Edit: Couple of Pictures in my gallery I believe if you want to take a look

Not so free when they hit you up for the $40 oversize shipping. Also too, the split lids are fugly .. LOL

Also too ... the guys above on the black boxes, those are lo-pro lids, not the standards. With toolboxes, everytime you say "and" or "with" to add a detail, the price goes up.

I just bought a toolbox from lowes and cant be happier. Very durable. You can stand on it and it doesnt bend or warp at all. If on a budget like me, best thing you can buy.

Don't forget about www.protech.net They will do custom and yes I understand they are not cheap but I would and many others consider them to be lifetime products. Picture of my cross bed box that was a custom shorter version of one of there RV boxes. Stock was 60" mine is 56".

I've had a UWS box in black for eleven years. It is still in excellent shape except the black has oxidized on the lid and is no longer shines. It has always been out doors, no leaks, seams still intact and I have it loaded pretty heavy. I moved it from an '05 Frontier to the '14 Tacoma. Mine is not a side mount, it is cross bed mount.
