I just picked up a 2012 double cab long bed this week and am shopping for a cap. I've been looking at the Leer XL and XQ series and stopped by a dealer today to get some info. When I mentioned what I was interested in, he recommended the XL over the XQ. He indicated that they have had a lot of issues with the XQs leaking around the windows. He also indicated that it tends to leak around the rear door because it doesn't overlap the tailgate.

Kind of caught me off guard because just about all the reviews I've read online have been very positive. Has anyone experienced this first hand or heard this also?

The canopy dealer I went to said the exact same thing and recommend me to go for the XL over the XQ.

I had quality issue with my old ARE cap, so I was going to give Leer a try this go around. I see a lot of good comments regarding Snug Tops, but there doesn't appear to be any dealers on the East Coast.

Maybe he only had the XL in stock? I have the XR and I had to seal the front properly with pipe insulation to close the gaps in both front corners. No leaks anywhere. I think they are the same, you just have to get inside at night with a flashlight and figure out where the gaps are.

I have an XQ. I had a leak around the third brake light...the foam weatherstripping didn't quite conform to the cap. I sealed it with clear silicone, and it has stayed completely dry inside since, even in touchless car washes.

I actually have had more water coming in the gaps around the sides and bottom of the tailgate than the cap.

I highly recommend LEER. I personally like the styling of the XQ. With that said, I think all styles of LEERs look good on the Tacomas. It all depends on what you are using them for and the price you want to pay.

He'd have to order me an XQ or XL and given that his recommendation was the cheaper of the two I'm not questioning his motivation. I prefer the look of the XQ but the XL looks nice also... I'm going to talk to another dealer or two and see what they say. Might be able to get a better price.

I like the look of the XQ also. I think you can seal either one to keep the bed dry. I bought the XR only because I found it on Craigslist for 500. Good luck. The cap has been great.

Does the door on the XQ overlap the tailgate at all? If not does it get a decent seal? I'm guessing it might not secure the tailgate requiring that the handle on the tailgate be swapped out for one that locks?

    None yet; soon.
I'm in the market for a Leer cap as well for my 2012 taco. Since I'm a complete novice on the topic very interested in this thread. Do people find most caps leak? And if so how much are we talking about, flood or trickle?

it just all depends on how good there sealed(bed tape)and our trucks take a special seal up front along the cab, sorta like a double seal.its like someone else said......at night take a flashlight around the edges and fill in accordingly.i do get some when i pressure wash it but i no where not to spray real hard

Mine only leaks if I spray water with a hose up under the side seam

I think a locking tailgate is a good idea on any cap , only the flexible part of the cap door really overlaps the tailgate by much

There is a rubber gasket that overlaps the tailgate about 3/8". There are also double weather seals on the door...one on the glass and one on the cap.

I would recommend a pop & lock tailgate handle. I've never tried it, but I think that someone could just yank open the tailgate past the door glass/tailgate gasket.
    I attached some pics...

I have a Leer 100XR. Had a leak around one of the side windows once .. only once. Never got it fixed, but it never leaked again either.

Thanks John those pictures were perfect. I spoke with another dealer today who claimed to not have anymore issues with the XQs than other caps. Makes me wonder how much how much of it is the quality of the installation.
