I've searched on other forums to see if I could find something similar to what I'm feeling, but I couldn't come up with anything. The other day (Thursday morning) I woke up and my neck (or lower....middle spine) hurt when I looked straight up, straight down, or when I turned my head from side to side. I didn't think much of it because it wasn't something I couldn't deal with. I went to work all day which is pretty physical and I was fine. I went to the gym and did dead lifts and I was fine. I then went to do dumbbell shrugs and all the sudden I felt a sharp throbbing pain in my middle back. I couldn't do hardly anything after that. I went home and stayed in bed all of Friday, and today it still hurts. It's like every little movement I make there is a sharp throbbing pain in the middle of my back. I can feel this pain from my shoulder blades to my ribs. Sometimes it hurts to breathe and swallow when I'm in a certain positions. I'm dealing with it for now but hoping it isn't anything too serious. I have work tomorrow and if I miss it because of this and they find out it's something really bad I'll more than likely be out of work for a good amount of time. Anyone care to chime in on what might be going on here?

deffently lay down on a heating pad. Loosen up the muscles around your back. Then do some stretches. Like touching your toes, bringing your knees to your chest things like that. And pop some antiflamitory medicine.

Well my back kinda stopped hurting during the week, so I went to work. My friday was yesterday and it started hurting again. It didn't hurt as much as before though. This time it's mainly under my shoulder left shoulder blade.....and the pain when I tilt my head up and down never really went away. I believe I'm going to see a chiropractor....

Shoulder shrugs contract the Levator and Upper Trapezius primarily, but also Rhomboids. U likely have a soft tissue injury in one of these muscles. Probably the Levator

Good luck with this injury and I hope it is not the same thing I have. After a long back and forth with doctors and such it was determined that I have degenerative disks in my back and base of my neck. It is very easy to inflame them and shrugs can cause them all kinds of discomfort. Sucks because I used to love doing them. Best advice I can give you is watch your posture when you sit. Take it easy lifting for a little bit especially when doing anything involving the traps. If it becomes chronic get an MRI to see what you are dealing with. Good luck

My wife is a Chiropractor. Try to find a good one in your area. A lot suck. But there are some great ones. If they give you a plan like 2x/week stick with it.

Hey my $0.02 here. I have a lot of back pain (back story, I fell ten feet on to concrete at a jobsite, crashing powersports equip n such) I saw a chiropractor for over a year, it was great while I was going, but as soon as I stopped, the pain came back. About four year later (present) I have been seeing a physiotherapist for 2 months, and I am fantastic, I am two weeks between treatments, doing stretches at home, and I am golden.

Hope it helps, I know how much back pain messes with your daily life.

Being in the meat biz my whole life (started in dad's shop at 11) I have a TON of back pain experience-which doesn't make me right but IMO you have the classic muscle spasm. Chiro's-I personally never went near one. You have a muscle that is yanking its corresponding disc and probably causing a jolt in the nerve, then swelling. Again-all IMO. Try ibuprofen, REST (which means total relaxation of that area for at least several hours) and a hot water bottle (heat from a hot water bottle IMO penetrates deeper). If you have a honey handy to gently rub it out that'd help too.
I would try the chiro as a last resort honestly-like stated earlier, some of them can actually make you worse.

Defiently try the RICE method for a few days, it that doesnt help I would try a chiro. If you know anyone that goes ask who they refer thats the best way, cuz there's just too many and it gives them a bad rep. I hurt my back a whle ago and never went to one, I thought it was just BS but I couldnt sit for more than 30 mins at a time it just hurt so bad. Found a good one and honestly after the 1st time it hurt im not gonna lie, i was really sore....but it cleared up and after a week i was fine. I think the trick is to do PT with the chiro to the affected area. Fix the bones that are out, and sthrengthen those muscles. Good Luck!
