Researching used axle with e-locker

I have a 2001 Dbl Cab Pre-runner, 2.7L, TRD Off-Road, without ABS truck. I'm looking to find a rear axle with the e-locker to swap out with my open diff axle. How can I expand my search beyond an exact match to my truck? Would anything in 2001-2004 work? Does it have to be non-ABS? Can Pre-runner and 4x4 be an option? Anything else that I need to be aware of? Thanks

 

Not sure about the ABS issue, but the donor vehicle can be a 4x4 or pre-runner. You need to be aware of the gear ratio of the donor. Hopefully it will be the same as your current, otherwise your speedo/odo will be off, and the computer might get confused.

You do realize that the 'swap out' has to include the entire housing, not just the diff, right?

 

Yes I'm aware that it is the entire housing. I've been looking into different locker and LSD options and am a little intimidated by pulling the whole differential apart. I thought if I could find a whole axle in decent shape, it'd be a relatively easy swap.

How do you determine what gear ratios are on what truck assuming that they are stock and haven't been changed?

 

if you have trd offroad you should already have the locker...

 

learned something new today, in that case make sure the gear ratio is the same unless you wanna regear, check on TTORA for a gear ratio guide, i had it favorited on my old computer but it tells you the ratio based on the VIN #....id look it up but im a lil rushed atm

 

If you have a 2.7L double cab then you have 4.56 gears.

 

To confirm, the tag on the driver-side door pillar tells you the axle code.
B04A means open 4.56.

The e-locked axle likely has 4.10 gears. You'll have to remove the diff from the housing and look at the ring gear. It will have either the ratio or gear counts stamped on it.

 

I confirmed the B04A code. I'm trying to avoid regearing. Is it possible to adjust the speed sensor or speedometer to compensate for the change to 4.10 gears?

 

2wd pre-runner

 

That was my original plan. From understanding putting in a LSD won't improve off road traction much and is a more complicated procedure but would result in the best on road handling The lockers like the Powertrax No Slip are easier to install but can be "squirly" in the snow. I'm wary of this b/c my wife drives the truck the majority due to my long commute. My goal in all of this is to have better traction off road when I go hunting or am driving around the farm. I don't do much off roading but am tired of the truck getting stuck in wet grass. Any suggestions other than by a new truck are greatly appreciated. I'm not in a position for a truck payment right now. Thanks
