Well the AR shot like a dream. didnt take long to get that aimpoint sighted in. Love that thing. 200-250 rounds and not a single failure! very very happy. picked up 4 1/2lb containers of tannerite for the next redneck shooting session!

Pmags are normally 12-15 bucks a piece without the window. Steel mags are usually around 10 bucks a piece

I usually shy away from Pmags.

During bitter cold conditions, i've had 2 pmags fracture.

 same with TX. It's gets cold here but when it's that cold I am not out shooting! I know some people don't have a choice but I am grateful that I do.

I used to feel that way, but two weekends ago I had another rifle freeze up on me thankfully it was an issued one and not one of my own. I still like P Mags though. Hopefully the next exercise will be warmer. Point being, you never know where you will be in the next few years.

All the steel mags I have used (mostly prebans) have had issues with the feed lips bending under any type of abuse

Edit: they might be aluminum now that I think about it

    Check out my sig...
Just started working on my next build. Rifle gear lower and larue stealth 16" upper with grippod.

Next on the list is probably a gisselle trigger. Still trying to decide what stock to get and probably going scoped on this one. My other is a spikes 16" and jd lower with ap pro and magnifier.

A Geissele is money well spent. I would highly recommend an aftermarket trigger to anyone building a serious AR. The factory trigger is definitely an accuracy inhibitor. There are several good brands to choose from.

how much of a hindrance is a milspec trigger with a 14.5" barrel shooting under 300m?

That's a hard question to quantify. It's like asking "How easy is it to shoot an AR-15?"

I can tell you that groups will be smaller with a good trigger.

    This.

And seriously, I consider the 5.56 to be stretched at 300m. Ya, it'll do it, and a good shooter can maintain a decent group, but I don't believe it was designed to shoot accurately beyond 200m. Over 200, I'd be reaching for a 7.62.

The main hindrance at that range is going to be the 14.5" barrel, but a 16" won't help... you'd need to move up to a 20", and of course, shoot the proper bullet weight (length) for the barrel's twist.

you do realize the current issued military M4's have 14.5" barrels? and they can and do engage targets beyond 200m...

If all your doing is stating personall preferance then thats fine but the 14.5" barrel does get shot over 200m. Hell, the rear flip up sight was designed to be able to shoot out to 600m. I have it in my hand right now and it lists
    200m
    300m
    400m
    450m
    500m
    550m
    600m

Revolution 4-12x40mm w/Accu-Range reticle - picked it up Black Friday 2010 at Cabela's for something like $150, crazy cheap.
