Have a roaring noise from left front 30mph on up

Bad roaring from left on my 2WD. When I turn left a little it quiets down, but going straight or making a right turn its kinda loud. I took it to the dealer for a coolant flush and had them drive it. He said without further investigation it could be the wheel bearing. Its been making this noise for about 9 months and I would think that a bearing would have gone out by this time. Any help would be appreciated.

Wheel bearing. An easy diagnosis. Jack the truck up and put it on stands. Grab the wheel and try and lift it up and down. If it moves, definately wheel bearing. 2wd's are easier to fix than 4wd, so it's not as complicated as you might think.

Texoma, I have seen pics and instructions on the 4 wheel drive but not on the 2.

 

Agree with wheel bearing. I changed one on a 96 bronco once, not that hard, i heard the noise up front but it turned out to be the opposite side rear bearing, so diagnosing correct bearing may be a challenge....bump for some help on how to..good luck

 

It's about the same, except you don't have to deal with a CV axle. You may be able to pick up the entire bearing assembly and avoid having anything pressed.

Isn't there a seal between the hub and bearing, and I have to press the hub onto the bearing or am I making this way to hard and getting it confused with the 4WD?

You can disassemble everything and then have the bearing pressed to save some cash. Whatever seals are there, you can reuse them, just be careful not to mess them up.

Pre runner wheel bearing is the same as 4wd wheel bearing except you don't have the cv axle to mess with. Find the write up on 4wd wheel bearing replacement and just omit anything that has to do with cv axles. Basically remave your brakes and take out 4 bolts on the back of the hub to get to the wheel bearing.

Ok, this is what happen when I changed the bearing. After I got the caliper and rotor off I could see where the bearing was bolted up by the 4 bolts, the heads are between the bearing flange and the hub. After I got the hub /bearing unbolted i seen a round nut w/4 holes in it(need a special spanner wrench) on the bearing side. This is where the problem started. Since I was going to take the assembly to a garage w/press anyhow I would just take the whole assembly and have them remove the nut, press the bearing from the hub and press my new bearing back together(not). The first garage I took it to said they have tried that before and they couldnt even get the nut off(it was a reputal garage too). The second garage got the nut off but said there was no way he could get the assembly situated in his press to separate it. He drilled the holes bigger in the nut so HIS spanner wrench would fit. He had to use heat to get it off. I said I need my truck for tomorrow and I asked if he could put it back on in case I couldnt get it done that day and he said no, I am leaving in 15 minutes. So I went home and called Toyota dealer to see if they had a whole bearing/hub assembly and they did not, it came separated anyhow. Service tech said bring it in(60 mile round trip) and they would separate it and press it back together for an hour charge of $98. In 45 minutes it was done. Went home and had it back together in 20 minutes, test drove it and the roaring noise subsided but didnt disappear, so the other side is next. So for the price of the bearing(Timken off Amazon/$75) and the pressing at the dealership($98) and some gas paid to neighbor($20 plus beer afterwards) I dont think it was too bad($193). I can give more detailed intructions on this if anyone needs them(omit the rest of the crap I went thru)ha ha
