changed rear diff oil at 11k

I changed my rear diff oil at 11k yesterday. Super glad I did. The oil had a weird metalic sheen to it. Also the drain plug had a few metal slivers on it. I know this is normal. Just saying so maybe it will motivate some others to change their (brake in) oil sooner than 30k.

I used 85-140 Lucas gear oil as recommanded by East Coast Gear Supply.

I didn't bother with taking pics.

 

Normal at any mileage.

 

just curious...why didn't you go with the weight Toyota recommends?

 

The heavier weight will prolong life. However there will be a slight affect on mpg.

 

Hmmm. I do not think it will hurt anything, but 85W140 should hammer your mileage.

I have over 250k on 75W85, which is what Toyota recommends. How long do you want it to last?

 

FOREVER! lol Ill keep track of my mileage for a couple of tanks. If its considerably bad ill change it out again.

85w140 is only going to "prolong life" if you do a LOT of heavy towing in hot weather.

For normal driving with little or no towing, or only towing a couple of quads, stick with 75w90.

You're better off simply changing more often than going with the heavy oil.

What next, 20W50 in the engine.

 

Hey its not like i came up with this on my own. Others on this forum use it and ECGS recommeds it.

 

I also use Lucas 85-140 in both my front and rear diff and my transfer case as well. I switched over from Mobil1 synthetic after numerous conversations with Chase from East Coast Gears. Also other specialist have also stated that in thier opinion this is the best diff and transfer case oil.

 

Any unwanted affects?

ECGS said they are right next to a Toyota dealership and they do all of the axel rebuilds for them.

 

85-140 is good insurance in these trucks for "hard use". I'll be switching to it once I regear.

Thats great. Thanks for the good information. Just because the manual says something doesnt mean its best.

 

Depends on what you define as "best". 75-90 is best for mileage. However, if I wheel my truck hard and break the diff, mileage don't come into play, so in that case "best" is maximum protection for the gears.
