A little food for thought to stick in the back of your head.

Many of us live in states that have on the books a law that uses the term "excessive force"

What this means is if you shoot someone and they were only armed with a club, then some asswipe bleeding heart prosecutor could indeed charge you even though the law clearly states you are covered under the self defense rules because you feared for your life.

Simple way to get around it is lay one of your unloaded long guns by the corpse and just say they must have found it in the hall closet, all you saw was a gun being pointed at you.

Another thing that will most likely get you charged for shooting someone is if they can prove that you pursued the intruder, once they turn tail the laws are on the intruders side because their is no longer a threat present.

It varies from state to state as far as when you can shoot someone. Most states seem to have the rule that if your life is in danger you can shoot them. That pretty much means if they come at you or have a weapon you're well within your rights to shoot them.

Whoever has the mean dogs should get rid of them. They will just end up attacking a kid or getting out and attacking someone else. Then you will be sued.

Always make sure of who you are actually shooting. I don't have statistics but a high percentage of rambo's defending themselves ends in a family member or friend shot.

My thoughts for defending oneselves are.

    1. Arm yourself
    2. Check for threats
    3. Identify intruder
    4. Identifiy backstop(path of bullets if you need to fire)
    5. If intruder moves toward you or appears to be raising a weapon shoot them till they drop

The castle doctrine is in place here too...pretty much you can assume if someone breaks into your house here...that theyre there to do you harm

    articulation is key

You'd be surprised at the number of judges/prosecutors who would charge you with a crime in those cases...the castle doctrine though is important because, at least here, iirc it protects the shooter from being taken to civil court by the family after the fact.

correct...that whole fleeing felon law is gonna take over as soon as the criminal/asswipe attempts to take off...best thing you can do is let them go and home you can get some sort of positive ID

If youre referring to our dogs, they are in no way mean dogs, they are territorial animals by nature and this is their territory. They believe that if someone is coming into the house without one of us, then they dont belong here

They have no issues with people coming in the yard or when we're around

The last place i lived had 3 kids who played with my dog constantly. She got her tail pulled, she got stepped on, hit by power wheels...she loved those kids

she just does not like people coming into this house when they shouldnt

And the more I think about it, the more likely it is that should some jackass break in and then when i confront him he takes off, that i will be in pursuit. But then again, i have a little more authority to do so

It's unlikely anyone would get by my dogs. If they did somehow get through my dogs, then I'd just have to kill them myself.

I've got 2 mag lites in my room, if someone breaks in they will get the alarm system in the house going and if someway, somehow they disarm it I've got 2 BB guns, a throwing dagger, and the mag lites...so I think shoot them in the face, throw a dagger at them, and then chuck the little mag lite and beat the living shit outta them with the 4D Mag.
Brutal enough? Hell NO! They breakin' into my house! I'm a beat the bitch! They're gonna leave dead or partially paralized and in a B&W.

One positive thing about Louisiana is if someone breaks into your house you can shoot to kill. I will make sure only my side of the story is told to the cops when they arrive.

he is a police officer. teaches the criminal justice class. i could be wrong though. he did say there could be some questions if the intruder was shot on the 1st floor but i really could care less. either way, im shootin the person no matter where they are in my house.
