Want to color-match front bumper - questions!

I'm looking to color-match my front bumper cover to the rest of my truck. I have a base model black (color code 202 "Black" - NOT 209 "Black Sand Pearl") 2011 Access V6 4x4... every time I look at the matte, unpainted, base-level bumper cover it bugs me. I'm ok with the fender flares being that way - I actually like the matte look on those, but the front bumper looks... off (at least to me).

What do you guys think would be the best solution would be? I've thought about starting a WTB thread in the 2nd gen marketplace for a color 202 front bumper cover, but it seems like one hell of a long shot (pretty much limited to the 2011 model year for that color) and the shipping is going to be ridiculous on something that big.

Any experiences getting the base bumper cover painted at a body shop? Does it look nice? Did it break the bank? Any other input is appreciated too. The only thing I'm not open to is an aftermarket bumper replacement. Too spendy, and most of them are designed for hardcore wheeling - too much bumper for how I use the truck. The worst it faces is about 5 months of snow, and some dilapidated dirt roads on my weekend hiking/trail running trips in the summer. I'm not climbing boulders with it or anything.

No, from what I understand, the black used on my 2011 (color code 202) is noticeably different than the black sand pearl (209) used in previous years.

Thanks though, this would be a lot easier if Toyota used the same black up until 2012, when they changed the bumper style. 2011 tacos appear to be the only trucks I'll be able to get an original off of.

 

It is easy to get painted at a body shop. Just make sure that they use an adhesion promoter (plastic primer) otherwise the paint will not stick. A good painter will know what to do.

To get your current bumper to exactly match your factory paint you're looking at about at least $300 for anything quality: prep, paint, clear. I recommend you find a higher end auto body shop in your area and see what they say. The paint alone will run you $60-90 + clear (colormatched paint starts at $250 a gallon... starts. But you only need about 1/4 gallon) Hourly prep rate + how they plan to do it: remove and sand will cost more than just masking it on the truck and roughing it.

You can probably find someone that will get it pretty damn close for $150-200, but it sounds like you have a very particular need from this paint job.

If you want to try it yourself, you can buy colormatched spraycans for about $20 a pop; you'll want 2-3 cans.

And yes, always use adhesion promoter on plastics.

 

I don't know much about wraps, but mabe you could get just the bumper wrapped/colormatched? shouldn't cost much I would think.

 

Thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it - I've got plenty to think about/research now... I'm actually thinking close would probably be good enough as far as paint goes. This 2011 code 202 "Black" is a pretty basic black. Apparently, it doesn't have as much of a metallic sheen that the BSP does, so I'm hoping it'll be easy to match... I may go driving around until I find a BSP taco and compare it to mine to verify all of this. I'm wondering now if the two colors are really as different as I've been reading...

I'm also going to look into this "wrapping". I had to google it because I guess I've been living under a rock. Pretty cool stuff though!

The color match will not be a problem. It is a standard Toyota color and you even have the code.
I had my bumpers, fender flares, nerf steps, bull bar and bottom part of truck painted for $700, but it was not at a body shop. It was at someone's house who do backyard work. A shop will be more expensive. I took the fender flares, steps and bullbar off to save on labor cost, and installed it again after he was done painting.
I just gave him the Toyota magnetic gray metallic paint code and he was able to get it by the code.
