Shooting my new AK-74

I had a TW member throw some new furniture and change up a Saiga 5.45x39 AK-74. He did an excellent job. Took it out yesterday for and I very impressed by the overall accuracy and power of this round. I shot 7N6 Russian surplus ammo.

Haven't figured out which scope or red dot to purchase, so using the good ol' iron sights, which were very accurate. This is about 125 yards. I was able to hit a soda can. Also, able to completely penetrate a steel rim.

We were also shooting 9 and .40's at this all day from about 7 yards. Decided to try the ak at 50 yards. I'm sure it would have went all the way through if it wasn't a swinging target.

 

Wow nice penetration on that steel.....7.62 FTW ninja!

 

The AK-74 shoots a 5.45x39 mm cartridge.

The AK-47 shoots a 7.62x39 mm cartridge.

Jealous. I'm in the middle of doing a milled M92 krink build right now.

I need to get this AK done.

 

.... Can you clarify that? The rim of a can?? Exact gun? Sorry but I'm lost.

 

1. I was able to hit a soda can
2. It completely penetrated a steel rim which was probably someone's spare tire.

Is a Russian designed AK or a Yugoslavian designed Saiga. IIRC they are not the same thing.

 

The Saiga line of rifles is built in the Izhmash Factory in RUSSIA.

 

The question was regarding their design. Is a Saiga a Kalashnikov? If the Saiga is not a Kalashnikov it is not an AK-74

 

The Saiga is a Kalashnikov. It's the same rifle, that the Izhmash Factory put a sport stock, and forend on, and sold with a 10 round magazine to make it more acceptable for the American import laws as a "sporting" or hunting rifle. For about $150 you can strip off all the "sporter" furniture and put mil type furniture back on, including the pistol grip to bring it back to military form. All of the internal mechanisms are exactly the same as the military built Kalishnakov rifle with the exception of the FA hardware.

Eat it up, the Saiga is a Russian built AK type rifle that is legal to import and own in the United States.
