I would like to change my gearing in my 02 Tacoma and my stock gears are 4:10 and I have put 33"s on my truck what would be a good gear to get back my mileage

I don't know if it can be done, saying this in a world that most anything can be done... but probably 3.73 would be a good start.

I must disagree with the concretejedi(master) on this one. I think when going to bigger tires you need a numerically higher ratio like 4.56 this would make the engine run closer to its original rpms (if it was OE size tires before w/4.10s).Would that get the mpg back..? doubtfull, performance/pep most likely. One thing to remember too is that unless you have your speedo/odometer recalibrated you will be traveling faster and puttinng more miles than what its showing.
P.S.No, I wasn`t consulting my magic 8 ball for this reply

yeah 4.56 is a good ratio but little higher rpms on freeway here is a good comparison

    http://www.superlift.com/images/misc/gear-chart.gif
I believe these are all with 1:1 gear in tranny and 65mph.. obviously over drive is slighty more like .86:1 but this is a good numbers comparison chart

stock rpms in 4th with 4.10 and 31's was 2896rpm

    rpms in 4th with 4.56 and 33's is 3018rpm

or you could switch to factory 4.30's with 33's be 2826rpm

not a bad jump and probably keep near same mpg

I think that i will go with the 4:56 gears I guess i will be running a little higher rpm but i cant get any other gear from 4wpw in between the 4:10 and the 4:56. The Superlift chart helped me pretty good and I also found another chart the had an equation on it and it said I should use 4:45? but i guess it it close enough to 4:56 to me. At least I will have a little more pickup for towing and mudding and hopefull my mpg wont be the same because i only get 14 mpg right now and that sucks. THANK TO EVERYONE THAT RESPONDED YOU HAVE ALL BEEN HELPFUL. TALK TO YOU ALL SOON.

Wrong direction in gearing - you want higher numbers like 4.56.

3.73's would be far worse than his stock gears - causing less rpm's and less power (so to speak).

An friends `69 Chevelle SS had 4.11s and you could almost see the gas gauge moving at 75 mph in that case a 3.73 would have helped mpg. by lowering the RPMs, totally different senario but just an example

yeah but to get power back and get better mpg "lower / deeper" or numerically higher gears as they are called.... is actually the way to go on this one... see if you have too low of gears the engine doesnt run in the sweet spot rpm and actually gets worse mpg... since throttle isnt open much the truck would get enough air etc etc. lol... i have a 69 Chevelle SS396 too LOL had 396 in it...now has 427 vette block with tons o goodies... had 4.88 gears with muncie M-21 4spd now 4.11 with TH-400 (nitrous use) going to muncie M-20 4spd and 3.73's////right now i get around 3 mpg...and with an 20 gallon tank........60 miles friends and neighbors (most my neighbors hate me, something about open headers when tuning the motor i dunno)

little lower gears will help but like anything you can go to far... not sure what would be good on 2nd gens but 4.56 is good for 33-35" tires on taco's or with 35's you can go 4.88 if your not on highway alot

    Thanks,

Does anybody really know what size gears are on the 4.0 Liter 2008 TRD Prerunner Double Cabs?? 4 wheel auto parts called somebody(?) and gave them my year and model and was told i had 4:10's or 11's (?) but after ALOT of research on gear ratio's i have read that these models have 3:73's. (internet stated that 2.7 Liter Prerunners had the 4:10's)

Also, i have seen about 4 different charts for tire size to gear ratio and they all seem diffrent. I definately want better MPG, and don't want to sacrifice lose of city or hwy power. What is the ideal RPM's for avg city speeds as well as Hwy speeds??

As stated in my previous, i am running 305's on 17 in rims.

Thanks ahead of time. I know somebody has the answers i'm looking for.
