So is this something common?

Hey guys,

I'm Tom, the new to me owner of a 07 Tacoma Dbl Cab. Here is the story, so I test drive this vehicle at the dealership. No problems, drives nice (only 16k miles) and everything seems fine. Come back a few days later after working numbers with them and purchase the vehicle. They wash it while I'm doing paperwork. When I get in, I notice a very slight musty odor, but it went away quickly and figured it was wet shoes on the carpet or something. Come out the next day and the truck is nasty, sour water smell inside the cab. I Pull up the carpet and see standing water on both the drivers and passengers floorboard. Called up the dealership and I'm bringing it in tomorrow. I'm assuming the water came in while they were washing it. I looked in all the usual spots and didnt see anything. Anyone experience this before? I did a serach but didn't turn up much. Hopefully they didn't get rid of my trade in, because if they dont get this and replace the carpet, they are getting it back!!!!.

Anyways, thanks for listening to my rant. If anyone knows where a common leak is, please let me know. I'm not familiar with this stealership and figured I would give them a head start.

as for your problem, I'm not aware of issues but I had a leak in my roof liner this winter. Like you, a very nasty smell. I still haven't traced it down either, but I suspect the 3rd brake light.

One thing to check is your cowl vent. On my old Jeep, leaves would get in there and block the drainage hole and thus the only place the water could come was into the cab through the HVAC.

I would be livid, how can they get that much water in there washing it. Sounds like there is something seriously wrong with your truck.

 

The same thing happened on my brother chevy colorado, the water came in from the 3rd brake light and water got everywhere.

 

Take it back to the dealer you bought it from and tell them about it.

And complain until they do something to fix it!!!

 

I would be VERY concerned that the previous owner sank your truck or flooded it. Did you get the CarFax report? Does it still have the warranty?

I sank my 2005 Dodge Dakota in water and had 3 inches of H20 in the cab. Once it dried up on the surface, it looked fine. The dealership that fixed it pulled up the upholstery 1 week later and found water still under the padding. They had to replace everything...including the engine (hydro-locked). I loved that truck too

Anyway, after the engine and upholstery were replaced, they fired it up. Water shot out of the exhaust system like a canon. It had been in there now for 3 weeks! They returned it that same day and I sold it the next day to an unsuspecting dealership. The truck was sure to have issues (electrical, rust in the exhaust, etc).

Bottom line...even if they fix a vehicle like that, you are going to have more issues down the road (literally). And most problems will occur after the existing warranty runs out. Get some answers and don't stop until you do. It can get VERY expensive if you don't!

 

Welcome to TW. If you do a search on here, there have been a few people that have reported issues with leaking around the windshield seal I believe. I think there may even be a TSB about it.

Sounds like you got some good suggestions & hope you are at the dealership today getting a solution to this. Its not normal at all & that stinks (literally) happening on your new to you truck with low miles? Wish the best on a fix & post up what the outcome is.

 

I would assume if it was actually wet when you picked it up (not prior damage) then I'd guess some idiot left a window open or something similarly stupid. A small leak in a windshield wouldn't cause that much water... but you could always run through a carwash to test it yourself, with the manager there.
My 08 has about 15k miles and I've gone through a number of carwashes with zero problems of leakage.

 

Coolant, leaking heater core? When you run the A/C is it leaving a nice puddle on the ground under the truck, if not may be a pulgged A/C drain.

 

Try changing your Cabin Air Filter !!! I had the same problem and you gotta change it from time to time. It is in-behind the glove box. I ususally get mine from Autozone or O-Reilly's and they sometimes need 1 day to get one in for me. $18-20. My wife has a 2004 Camry and it has one too. It started to smell like wet carpet. Changing the "Cabin" air filter, problem went away!

i'm willing to bet that it was something dumb that the dealership did while washing it, not a previous problem...about 7 months ago we had tropical storm Fey drop over 2 feet of rain on us in a couple days. all of the roads here were severely flooded (melbourne florida). i decided to go exploring after the rain stopped to see the dammage. i ended up driving across a lowlying road, and drove through water for abotu 100 yards that was just below my door handles, and stayed completely dry inside...moral of the story is that from my experience, other than the leaky windshield, our trucks are very watertight...so most likely it's the dealer's fault.

 

You'd be surprised. I remember someone posting that their truck floor was damp every time that it rained.

 

Thanks for the responses guys. Under the carpeting in the rear seems fine. Carfax shows 0 reports. The truck is an 07 but only has 16k miles. Heading to the dealership tomorrow....... I'm thinking leaking windshield seal or floor board plug missing?

What about a/c condensation leaking?

 

A/C is a good possibility. I need to take a look at the drain and put something down to check for leaking. It was on both sides of the floorboard, I think A/C would only shop up on one side?

 

Any fix for this truck?
