I bought an 02 Tacoma last fall from a engineering firm, but they could not tell me if the truck had the timing belt changed or not. Is there anyway to tell, or can a dealership look it up? I have just over 140k on it and if it hasn't been done, I figure I better do it soon!

I would just do it, it'll be due in 40k anyway if it was done at the recomended 90k mile mark.

That is true, then have the peace of mind that it will not leave me stranded! Do you know what a dealership charges to change that out?
I have to leave town for a couple weeks for work and was going to try and have the work done while I am gone.

About $1200 including parts is what some have paid.

Really? That's crazy. I was quoted about $600 from my local Toyota dealer about a year and a half ago. I guess it depends on what they charge for parts and what all they replace. I've called several different Toyota dealership parts departments and found out they all charge different prices. Calling around can really save you some cash.

I ended up doing it myself and spent about $300-$400 on parts and tools (bought a torque wrench and BluePoint pulley holder).

I don't think there's a way to tell if the belt has been changed in the past unless someone has a record of it. I changed mine at 106000 miles and it still looked really good, but better safe than sorry. I also wrote on my belts with a paint marker the milage, so on mine you can tell ;)

Yeah, that was worst case scenario.

If it was perfromed by a dealer, which seems fairly probable if it was owned by a business, it may appear in dealer service records, which you should be able to get on toyotaownersonline.com. Just register (free) and enter your VIN.

The general practice for most shops is they write the date and mileage on the piece of metal in front of the radiator with a paint marker.

Just signed on to toyotaownersonline.com, unfortunately, the last service record shown was at 75,000 miles. I like the number in the $600 range much better than the $1200 range!

Just talked to the Toyota dealership in CO Springs, they quoted me $592 for the timing belt and water pump! Dropping it off this Saturday!

It didn't show detailed records, but it did show that regular maintenance was done for the most part up to 75,000 miles. So that is a nice piece of mind! I also need to get some oil seals changed. The rear oil seal on the front diff is leaking and so is the rear oil seal on the transfer case. They wouldn't give me a price over the phone on those. Hopefully it will only take them an hour per seal to change, plus parts. I was going to change the oil seals myself, but you need a puller and some other parts, way harder than the oils seals on the Jeep differentials!

THIS. My local Toyota technician told me the same thing, he said they mark on a little placard near the radiator.

I'll need to look for mine. I have dealer records confirming the change from before I owned it, but this would be great info for people to have. I'll take a pic and post if I find it.

There are no marks under the hood that I can find stating that the timing belt was changed. It seems like all the maintenance was kept up, but for $600 I will have it done for the piece of mind!

I would suggest making a few more calls! Seems like it would be cheaper in TX to have it done then CO!

If the previous owner had the belt changed by a Toyota dealer you should be able go on line with the vin # and get that info. High light and paste this .Enter your vin and other info.

I logged into this yesterday and the last service record listed was at 75,000 miles for the manual transmission. So my guess is that it wasn't changed or it was changed at a smaller service garage.
