Graphics card help

I built my system about 3 years ago and last night my first component went down. My 8800GTS 512 gave out.

It's been a while and I'm not as up to date hardware wise as I use to be. Need to replace this ASAP as I work, and play, off of this computer.

What's an equivalent card out now, and what's a step up or two?

The guy at the local PC shop suggested an ASUS 440 (ASUS ENGT440/DI/1GD5 GeForce GT 440 (Fermi) 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E) for $105.00, the 550's he had were all over $149.99.

I found an ASUS 550 TI on Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121435 with after rebate for $109.00

Is the 440 about straight across? Do I need to step up to the 460, or the 550? Sorry if I'm speaking a different language... and thanks for the help.

 

It comes down to what you wanna spend, what games you play, and what work you do. Was the 8800 doing everything you needed, or was it lacking?

If it was fine, then either of those cards will do. If you want some more power look into the 560 ti

 

best cards on the market for the money are the AMD 6770

low power consumption and a good step up

the 7xxx series are awesome though if you spend the money you can run a 2 gig card on 500 watts and blow the water off a 6770, but 6770 is usually 80 to 120

dont be scared to get out geforce, their new line cards are just so meh and under acheivers

 

I don't game nearly as much as I use to on this actually. Mainly now just work and WoW. I've swapped over to the PS3 for most of my gaming.

I'd really like to keep it under 140ish if possible. I just had some unexpected expenses come up with my dog

After rereading that I failed to make something clear, almost any newer card out now will be faster than the 8800. I used to have the same card, 8800 gts. I upgraded to a GTX 260 when they came out and it was night and day, then I upgraded to to GTX 470's in sli. The 470 was a fantastic card, I would recommend picking up a used one. They can be had around $100

 

Would stick with nvidia over amd as well.

 

I'm waiting for the pci express 3.0 cards to come down in price

I'd go with a radeon card for sure

 

radeon IMO has won this generation of videocards hands down, on a card basis series to series level

now the big fight is less power consumption so they can boost their speeds some more,

i ran a 560 compare the 6770 it was laggy, fell behind on the bench marking, while it used less power than my 6770 is also fell behind on graphics rendering

again its personal preference as at this point id say anything 400 series or 6000 series is a substantial upgrade

 

Their drivers are terrible and always have been

 

exactly what im doing, i want to go the new 7970 to drop so i can cross fire two of them

the pricing is just a little outrageous at the momment

 

amd lost me when they released a faulty driver that stopped the fans on the videocard and fried my GPU and did nothing to replace my 2 month old card

their excuse was that it was just WOW that was incompatible with their driver....

 

I'm speaking from just numbers I've always ran Nvidia but I hearing good things about the new radeon stuff.

My system that just died (motherboard) was the shit 5 years ago with

2 8800gts cards ran in SLI with 2 dual opterons on a server board

Now I can build a better machine for 400 bucks instead of the 2 gs I dropped on that thing.

That has been my experience as well. I've had multiple problems in the past with the Radeon cards overheating as well as having driver issues. It's hit or miss with these cards but I will stick to nvidia for now.

That is awesome ... seeing this post reminded me I bought EVGA mobo and GPU. I RMA'd ... have a new one on the way. The guy said it would be equal to or greater than.

I had already purchased the 6770 from Amazon, so I'll most likely just return that.

I'm loving my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti. It's an affordable higher end graphics card, and honestly the one to get if your limit is around $100

 

where did you find that for $100?
