I have a 2012 PreRunner double cab. The gas mileage is 15 mpg there abouts. I previously had a 2008 just like it and was getting 20-21mpg. My driving habits are the same and I'm using the same gas in both of the trucks. The difference I see in the trucks is that the 2008 did not have varible valve timing and the 2012 has it on both the intake and the exhaust I'm told. I have friends that have a 2010 and 2011 Models same packages and they are both getting in the 20's. I believe those models have varible valve timing just on the intake. Could it be that the parameters are not set correctly in the computer for the valve timing and this is causing the increased fuel usage? Has anyone else experinced the same problems and is there any kind of Service notice on this problem. All help would be appreciated. First time poster.

750 mile on my 2012 DCLB Auto 4wd Sport. I have averaged 16.8 miles per gallon, mixed driving. My 07 that I had before was averaging 17.5 per gallon the past few months. Winter gas here on the east coast?

My DC 4x4 was about 16-17mpg until 2500-3000 miles then went up to a bit over 20mpg. Took some breaking in.

Is the VVT on the intake or exhaust valves and is this adjustable at the dealership? Thanks

2012 TRD double cab, long bed, just turned 1600 and have been getting 18 - 19mpg. I do about 50/50 highway, city. Just traded 05, same exact truck and was getting 20 - 22 same route. I figured that it would loosen up after I got some more miles on it.

VVT can't be adjusted. That refers to the special cam gears that can advance or retard the intake camshafts via electronically-regulated oil pressure.

It's not unusual for a vehicle to take 5-10k miles to start getting its best mileage. All the rough machined surfaces get smoothed as they initially wear and it takes time.

Ok I wondered how Toyato was doing the verabile timing. So it is changed be increasing and decreasing oil pressure due to engine RPM?

I'm at ~15mpg city driving with ~2000 miles on the truck

Highway seems to be much better (no surprise) - but 90%+ of my miles are city

My 2012 4.0 DCLB averaged over 22 on the commute this morning. I was getting more like 17 for the first 1500 miles or so, but I think its settled now, more or less.
