    Need help!
I am considering trading in my 2006 TRD off road 2x2 for a fully loaded 2012 4x4 TRD off Road with T/X package and tow package. Can someone explain all the new lock diff VASC etc etc...
I drive lots of highway miles, just occasional bad weather days here in north texas, so wondering whether I even need 4x4 with all this stuff????

There is a lot of details in my posts, so don't be affraid to ask questions about the 4WD, locker or traction controls of the Off Road TRD... I won't bite your head off or say use the search! I like talking about my Tacoma almost as much as I like driving it!

No, but I am still learning... I have some new info based on our Borrego desert run of last Saturday, as well.

    Thanks David K and Whippersnapper02...
Gave me fantastic direction on the models to narrow down to..I suppose I will go with a new loaded 4x4 TRD off road or a 4x4 Tundra Limited.

    Howdy all,
I am looking to upgrade my 2005 access cab prerunner taco to a new 2012 dble cab long bed 4x4. The problem I am having is:
The 2012 tacoma brochure shows that the electronic locking rear differential is available with a package (trd offroad or sport ???) on the dbl cab long bed. However, several dealers I have contacted here in So Cal cant seem to find one, and are saying I can only get the locker on the short bed.
If I am going 4x4, then I definately want the e-locker over the limited slip diff, and yes I need the long bed.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Does anyone know if there are aftermarket lockers for the 2012... ARB??

    Thanks all

    Jesse

    Yes,

The E-locker is only available on the TRD Off-Road package. Ether on the Access cab 6ft bed or the Double Cab 5ft bed.

Double cab 6ft bed is only available in Base, SR5 and TRD Sport.

Not sure about aftermarket lockers but I m sure they're out there.

Anyone know if the double cab long bed SR5 has the ATRAC?

In order to get ATRAC you have to get a TRD Sport and I believe you can get a TRD Sport with the long bed.

EDIT: Thanks for taking my glory.

    Wrong

TRD Sports don't have ATRAC , but you can get them in a DCLB

 not only did you take my moment of glory I was also very wrong. Must have fat fingered Sport instead of Off Road...happens all the time.

    Hi Jesse,

When I went from my 2001 xtra cab/ 6 ft. bed (was a 4WD Off Road) to my 2005 double cab/ 5 ft. bed (4WD Off Road), I was concerned about being able to fit either all my work gear or all my camping gear and was ready to order the bed extender...

Once I loaded my new 5 ft. bed I discovered that while it was a foot shorter, the 2nd Gen. trucks are bigger and the bed is both wider and deeper than my '01 bed. I could carry the same amount of tools and equipment (as well as camping gear) in the '05's 5 ft. bed as I could in the '01's 6 ft. bed.

The important thing was to have the 4WD Off Road package (for the locking rear diff.)... I now am in a 2010 double cab 4WD Off Road which since '09 has added even more traction with the TRAC and A-TRAC systems.

IF you still need the longer bed in a double cab, and want more traction in L4 (low range 4WD)... then do the '4 low trac mod' (yellow wire mod). This fools the system into thinking it is still in H4 (all Tacoma models have TRAC limited slip since '09 in H2 and H4, but not in L4)... greatly improving low range traction. A-TRAC is an entire level above TRAC in traction, being much closer to lockers on the front and rear than limited slip differentials. But, limited slip still beats open differentials!

David K....... thanks. You explained it well. I need the long bed to haul my off road motorcycles out to the desert/mountains; the rear wheel would hang off the tail gate on the shortbed. Actually, I wish the bed was about 8" longer, then I'd be able to close the tail gate.
So I did read about the yellow wire mod; does anyone know if this still works properly on the 2012 SR5 4x4? Does this give lsd-like traction to front AND rear?
Thanks to everyone here, for the help and info.

    Jesse

I may also consider the ARB or True-trac in the future, for the rear end... if I still feel I need that locker.

Yes to the front and rear part... I see no reason or recall any changes to the 2012 system. You next traction option would be to install aftermarket lockers... ARB is quite popular.

Just picked up my 2012 AC 4x4 6 spd SR5 in Spruce. Was very surprised to see the LRD button on the dash. I thought they were only available on the TRDs.
Still plenty of snow here in NS, so tested it out, and by gum it works.
    Only in Canada eh?
