Possible to prevent the truck from "arming" when locked from inside?

I love my Tacoma, but it has a few "features" that I think are stupid.

For example, last night I went to my truck, unlocked it, got inside, shut the door, locked it from the inside using the button on the door, then when I put the key in to start the truck, the alarm went off. It was the middle of the night, and I probably woke someone up.

Why does it arm when you lock it from the inside? That makes very little sense to me. Basically if I want to sit in the truck with the doors locked, I have to make sure I "disarm" the vehicle before I put the key in the ignition when I'm ready to go... plus I have to deal with the flashing blue light.

Maybe the alarm system just simply doesn't have a way of detecting whether it's locked by remote or by the door button itself. I'm not sure. At any rate, can anything be done about this? Just seems silly for it to be armed while I'm sitting in it.

    Vehicle info?

    Is this a factory alarm?

Well, it's a 2011 Tacoma Double Cab, and the alarm came with the truck.

Does your alarm not lock the doors after you start the vehicle? That's what mine does but I have it enable to arm after 30 seconds when the doors are closed so if I'm sitting inside with the doors lock, unless I start the vehicle it will automatically arm itself. However if I go inside the truck and start it before the 30 seconds are up it will automatically lock the doors for me. Why not just lock the doors after you have started the vehicle because I'm sure the alarm won't go off then. I have an aftermarker Python alarm.

The doors do automatically lock when I start the vehicle, but what if I want to lock the doors without starting the vehicle? What if I just want to sit in my truck for a while? Maybe I'm waiting for someone, or maybe just relaxing, or eating, or reading something. In these cases, I might want to have the door locked but I wouldn't want the truck to be armed.

On another note, if I do unlock the truck and do nothing for a little while (i guess 30 seconds), then it does lock itself again. I don't like that either, and hope there is a way to disable that.

The only true way to disable that is to have someone look at the configuration and set it up differently or putting it in valet mode which depending on the alarm and the remote type. I can put mine on valet mode when it's being worked on like at a shop but I have to do it manually.

My Tundra and Silverado both did that. Wife's aftermarket alarm on her Echo did it... I've never checked her '04 Rav but I think it does.

This is a security feature so in case someone else happens to have the same remote code (unlikely but possible), your vehicle will automatically relock after they unlock you.

The solution is to unlock it, then pop a door open and closed again. That should disable the relock unless something is wrong.

Edit: Maybe some information here if it's the factory RS3200 Plus

If I want to sit in my truck here's a trick I do. I get in the truck and turn to ignition to all the way to on? Without starting and then back to acc? so I can listen to the radio. I'll have to look closely at my truck to see what settings but that trick will work if u just want to sit inside. As long as you keep the door closed it will keep the alarm from being armed.

The problem is that occasionally I will be in the house or somewhere and I'll have to grab a bunch of stuff to take to the truck, so I'll just unlock it from inside the house, and then fill my arms with whatever I need to carry... but by the time I get there, it relocks.

I realize it's only a very, very minor annoyance, so if nothing can be done, no big deal. Just wondered if there was a way to disable it.

Thanks to everyone for all the responses, too. I appreciate it all.

I have a 06 and it came from the dealer (SoCal) with a code alarm (Guardian) installed.
Does yours have a flashing LED and a momentary button around the driver footwell?
Check your invoice for what was installed.
There's a couple of threads with how to program the options yourself if you have it.

Your can change the behavior. I have the OEM (VIP RS3200 Plus) security system and it doesn't act in the same manner. If you have the same or similar alarm, it appears you have passive arming enabled when you would really prefer manual arming instead.

With the latter setting (manual arming), the system will not arm until you alone use the remote to lock the doors, which also arms the security system. Absent that, you can sit in the vehicle all day or night, with the doors locked or unlocked and the key inserted or not, without the alarm activating. Likewise, the vehicle can sit in your garage (unlocked) for weeks without any automatic operation of the locks or alarm. Of course, arming the alarm involves nothing more than locking the doors with the remote after you exit the vehicle.

However, that doesn't change the behavior of the doors or alarm when you unlock using the remote without entering the vehicle. With either setting (passive or manual), the doors will automatically relock and the alarm will automatically rearm if a door isn't opened within 30 seconds of the remote being used.

The sequence for programming the alarm (passive arming on/off, entry delay time, etc) is described in the alarm's owners manual. You want passive arming off. That sequence is rather involved (many steps), so it's best if you refer to that manual while doing so.

The manuals are in the thread I linked above.

I tried several times to follow the programming steps provided in the linked owner's manual and it never worked. Each time I got to the part where it said the door should lock itself in 2 seconds and if not, start over, it never locked itself.

This doesn't work because as soon as I turn it back to ACC the doors unlock. The whole point is that I'd like to be able to sit in my truck with the doors locked without it being armed or having that annoying blue LED flashing.

I tried to find a way last night, and I just couldn't. No matter what I did, the truck armed itself whenever I locked the doors. The only thing that didn't arm the truck was when I locked the driver side door using its own lock switch (not the universal lock button), but I didn't try doing that for each door because I shouldn't have to do that anyway.

I probably do have it set to passive arming, but even after following instructions in the manual (the one linked in this thread), I was unable to change the mode.
