Well, just as the title states...

I've been looking for a cap for my Prerunner and am curious as to whether caps in general open up from the inside of the bed.

Reason being, I camp quite a bit and if I had a cap, I could just sleep in the bed, but obviously I don't want to be locked in like a dog cause that would just be goofy screaming for help at all at a campsite...

I know the ARE for the Tundra has a knob to open it from the inside if it's latched shut.

Isn't that kind of a safety thing? I thought they'd all be designed not to lock you in.

Modern SnugTop as well, I have one on order right now.
"Anti-Mobster" button as the salesman called it... press the red button and it bypasses the lock and allows the latch to be operated from inside.

I am curious if it can also be used to latch the door... Would be really nice to be able to "lock myself in" for those quick rest-stop snoozes.

I use my LEER for camping all the time. There are no handles on the inside, but all three windows have the standard "T" handles on them and I have no issues turning them from inside if needed. Usually I just leave the handles unturned. The only way I could get locked in is if someone else had the keys and locked me in on purpose from the outside.

My old Innovation was that way... but the new Snug I have on order allows you to exit if you are locked in.
Like I said... it would be nice to be able to lock myself in for security. I was never comfortable snoozing in the back of that '94 HiLux with the door unlocked.

Yeah, not that a cap is high security, but if you could lock yourself in, they'd have to make noise before they got to you. It's not an issue where I camp, and I never camp alone. There's usually several people in my group sleeping in tents or in other vehicles close by.

Rest stop sleeping is a no go for me. The only way I'd ever feel comfortable with that is if I had a van.

I hear ya... it's not the best way to snooze, but in states that allow travelers to carry a gun, all I need is a little noise.
I'm a light sleeper on the road anyways and the slightest touch on the truck would wake me.

Whatever works for you. I'd either not be able to sleep, which would kind of defeat the purpose, or else I'd need breaking glass sound to get to wake up in time to grab the gun.

Vans are nice for that sort of thing because you have the option of just jumping up front and driving off if something's not quite right.

    :laughing::laughing::rofl:

My Snugtop has a pushbutton lock, so you essentially lock it, lock yourself in, then use the red button to open it from the inside. it will still be locked, until its opened with the key. they have moved away from the recessed 'T' handle lock this last year, but prolly have a a newer version of the same feature.

IMO-Snugtops have the best features and value for your $$$. good shit. Not that its cheap, but it aint cheap. if you know what i mean.
    Snugtop FTmfW.

Leer is the goods too, just a bit pricier, and different packages.
pretty sure old 'Pedro del Norte' has a Leer- someone could ask him about his package....:facepalm::bananadead:

    Looking for ideas...
Truck (Tundra now) has back window that slides down all the way open and adjoining campershell window folds all the way open. That makes it easy for dogs and myself to climb through for camping, when I get locked out and have to retrieve the keys, and temperature regulation for animals. I can usually leave 9 windows open for them that way. It is required that the dogs are always with me.

The largest dog can't fit in the cab and is supposed to be safe in the camper shell, which was ordered with special pet screens on the windows to keep her safe from escaping.

However, newer snugtop has saftey inside opener button on the tailgate window latch that my 153 lb dog figured out yesterday. Luckily we were at the beach when she released the latch and jumped out and not in traffic or anywhere else. She has opened it over and over again since and I can't go anywhere until I somehow disable the inside opener somehow. It opens from the inside even when locked from the outside. She could let the other dogs out too and they could all get killed.

I have her tied to the back corner of the cab temporarily which risks injury to a dog that size on rough roads especially, and she hates it, but she can still open the inside latch to let the other dogs out.

Snugtop dealer said disabling inside opener is a safety liability, so they won't help, but so is offering products like pet screens to keep animals from escaping while also providing them with an actual button to escape out another window.

I need to create a casing or buffering that would prevent the dog from all latch opening mechanisms on the inside so she can not open the camper shell whenever she wants, potentially causing all three dogs to escape or allowing a robber easy access inside the bed and entire cab of the truck. Any ideas? This design flaw has the dogs and I completely grounded.

My dog was on a 18" leash that was mounted on a bed cleat.

She could put her nose out the window, she couldn't put herself out of the window.

All your dog needs is restraining, @Dawg. It isn't a design flaw, either.
