Gears seem to be in good shape. I just have to take all of this shit apart and clean it. Then I need to find a shim or two to put behind the "sun" gears. (the gears on the outside)

I'm gonna have to pack it with fresh grease after cleaning it. Anyone know what I can use for this? I'd rather not have to drive half an hour to my LHS to get it.

I'm no expert on gear diffs, but does it really matter what grease used, as long as they're lubed? Throw a ball diff in there and see the difference in handling/cornering, not nearly as durable, but better for the track.

I'm pretty sure you can tune a sealed gear diff based on what weight oil is in it. So instead of an Allen key on a ball diff you would experiment with different viscosities. This keeps the durability while being tunable.

I fully believe your correct, however, how long would it take you to "tune" a diff your way vs. mine. I'm pretty sure most racing models come with ball-diffs. for drivability and tune ability. The last model I had with a gear diff was in 1986, (Koyosho Ultima) and even then I swapped it out for a "Option House" ball unit.

No doubt ball diffs are easier to tune. Remove dog bone/cvd and insert Allen vs tearing everything apart to change the oil.

I've been out of the game for a while. Back then only 1/8th buggies had gear diffs. Any other racing platform had ball diffs.

You are probably right. I am just barely getting back into this hobby. The only racing chassis I've looked at is the SC10 4x4 FT which uses gear diffs.

Do they put ball diffs in high torque vehicles now?

I'm looking into selling my T-rex 600. Shipping would be on your dime, though I would prefer not to. My 600 is FBL, with a Compass 6HV head, MOD1 main gear, Scorpion 4025 motor on 12S power. Inolab DS760 (.09ms) for cyclic, Logictech tail servo. Currently has Microbeast FBL gyro installed but I will probably take it out to install in my 500. This is not a for sale post, however if anyone is interested we may be able to work something out. Its my baby, I don't want to sell it but I think I'm gonna need the cash.

Yeah, that kinda wigs me out, the 4x4 FT gets gear diffs, and the 2wd FT gets a ball diff. IDK, I guess throttle imput is not as important on a 4wd model.

As far as the stock gear diff, I feel like it was dialed in pretty good. It could be a little bit tighter. But, you're saying I can pretty much use anything to lube this? Automotive diff lubricant, perhaps?

I've always thought ball diffs were more for 2wd vehicles and gear were more for 4wd

Just got off the phone with Team Associated. They're sending me a diff rebuild kit for free along with extra shims.

My buddy is going to the huge race in GA this weekend. I forgot what the name of it is. one of te nicest tracks in the area and he races with that "feltit" or "tipit" fellow that is close to or maybe #1. I forgot. He talks about it all the time at work.
He is letting his boys run his cars this weekend. Watch out for "valikonis" and the rockstar crew. good friend of mine from work for the 3 day weekend race.
