I have a buddy who received his BS in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State and last year finished his PhD in Chemistry at UNC Chapel Hill.

He now works for the Army, as a chemical engineer (natch) in Baltimore working on rocket fuel.

Point being: Chemist, works specifically on fuels.

I asked him about the Shell "Nitrogen Enriched" thing.

    His response:

It depends what they did with the Nitrogen. "Nitrogen Enriched" doesn't mean shit by itself, because what are they enriching? Which chemical compound that is part of their fuel blend, and how? Nitrogen can do a lot of things chemically, but it's not like you just dump it into stuff like Kool-Aid mix. There's a chemical production process.

He said they could do a lot of things with it that would be beneficial for gasoline engines, but it certainly wasn't as simple as dumping a bunch of liquid N2 in some gas and stirring. There's a complex process going on for production of...whatever they're doing.

So in the sense that Shell markets it (Nitrogen Good!), it's not that simple, but per people who would know, it could still be a good thing for the fuel and the vehicles. How exactly it is good, Shell is keeping under wraps as a proprietary trade secret.

Isn't Techron a licensed, patented product owned by Chevron? If so, maybe Chevron sells the rights for other brands to use Techron in their products...? hmm

You're right-Texaco and Chevron (who owns Texaco) are the only places far as I have read, plus you can buy their stuff bottled. I believe that's it.

Why do people think their fuel is dirty enough to have to add some thing to it?

Yup, believe you're right, other brands have it, if it is licensed to Chevron, they sell it to others.

Try a blind test - let someone else fill it up w/o you knowing what it is, then drive it for a week.

Because there is bias if you know that it's 87 vs 91.

Kinda like saying I love Bud but hate PBR and then in a blind tasting you pick PBR. When you don't know what it is the difference may become smaller or disappear, or not.

I did this with my truck. Had my Wife fill it, and log what she put in, then I would drive, and record differences in mpg.
