redneck tire carrier

Was screwing around with the idea of using an old weight beach to make a tire carrier. Got some thinking to do but should be pretty easy.

I'd paint the old bench real good, it'll rust pretty quick in the elements.

 

I like to use stuff people think is trash. The pic below is a welding bench I built out of an old computer server tower.

I could be a badass and say I bench my truck but i'd be lucky if i could bench the tire.

Finished the hold down and the lower foot that sits on the bed floor. I'm still working on the rear cross bar. I want to make it so I can store it under the front cross bar when the carrier is in the down position.

General question here; I see the purpose of having the spare in the bed for quick access, but tire carriers in general take up alot of room in there. Why would you want to give up the function of having the open bed just to display your spare?

 

I do alot of fishing and camping and have had to change a tire in some very nasty weather. It really sucks if you can't get to your spare or it's stuck or pouring out. I've had trucks in the past that I had to cut the cable to get the spare down. The carrier flips up if i need to put lumber or plywood under it, as for big things I have a trailer for those.

Totally agree on the convenience, With my tonneau i had the spare back there in the winter so it would be way easier to change a flat god forbid I got one. But you cant move this around, stand it up in the corner or on top of something else just to get it out of the way.

I finished the rear bar the other day. The rear bar is in 3 pieces the outer pieces stay on the bed rail while the center section comes off and attaches up under the front bar when not in use. The whole carrier can be removed with one allen wrench in about 5 minutes.

 

Looks like about 70 or so pounds.
