Bigger Tires - Less Power

I just had 285/70/17 Duratracs put on yesterday and it feels like i dont have as much HP as before. I was wondering what mods/upgrades i can install to get it back to normal or above. Any suggestions?

 

Re-Gear

 

Nothing that's really financially practical.

 

You're forcing your engine to turn larger heavier tires so the tires are eating more hp. A CAI, TRD exhaust, TB spacer, etc won't do crap to gain back the hp you lost. The only real way to get power if force induction, i.e. super charger.

You can also regear your truck, but since you have 4x4, you need the front and rear gears to match, so it would be about the same price to supercharge (if you pay a shop to do the regearing).

You can live with the 16 mpgs until your tires are gone then step down to a smaller size, or regear, or super charge/ Really those are your options.

 

Sell the tires you have now and step down a size. That's the best way.
That or turbo Witch if you do it i want to see

well i'm not stepping down a tire size until it's time for some new ones, if i step down then. These look awesome so i'll just live with the less power. i got them for the looks and the occasional mud trip. thanks for the advice guys!

 

It is just a matter of science the larger tires weigh more and change your gearing. It suprises folks how much a few more pounds per tire make it work so much harder and plus the taller gear makes it even tougher to move everything.
I put 255-85-16 KM2s on and they weigh 10 lbs more than the stockers each.
Milage dropped like crazy but I feel the tradeoff for the better clearance and traction are worth it.

 

i wonder all the time if 285's are worth the loss of power (and likely the 6th gear in my manual becoming useless). a couple of inches of tire doesn't seem like a good tradeoff for the loss or the costs of buying more power. auto might be different...

 

Ok, before anyone else tells you to supercharge or turbo, you need to know that your horsepower hasn't changed, what did is your tire size. Think about it, your rim is still spinning at the same speed but you're covering more ground due to the larger diameter of the tire. Thus you lost power. Re-gear and you'll get back all the power you had before you added the bigger tires, I'd say 4.56 will get you back to where you were.

Your local handy dandy mechanic will do it for a fee, and probably get all of the parts you need for a small fee. If you do it yourself, you can save a ton of money. Basic tools are needed, with the exception of a press ... a local shop will do it for cheap.

ps.. Price depends on where you live, and who you know. Also how fast you want it done, and how much your mechanic bends you over... I think $600 would be a fair price ... But I just pulled that out of my ass..

 

I have a 285-76-16s and I have no issues driving in 6th gear! I drive from 4k-7k feet in a 5 mile stretch of road everyday and it will pull the hill in 5th gear at 50mph, so its not THAT big if a change in gearing. Does it feel fast? No, its a 236 hp off road truck, not a race car. LOL

Anyone in Souther California want to recommend a good shop that will re-gear? I have looked into ordering from east coast gear supply and trying it myself but not 100% sure thats the best idea. Any idea the cost to re-gear both diffs?
