I've been a semi-lurker on this board for a while. Decided I would let everyone know about the upcoming build. Here's the truck last winter before the wreck:

    Tacoma_cae613046c94e975a5420fdff06e47ef996cabb6.jpg

A couple of weeks ago (I'll spare the boring details) a guy rearended me (there has to be a better way of saying that) and knocked me into another vehicle. Long story short, insurance cut me a very hefty check for the repairs. I have a buddy that is really good at body work, he's fixing it for a mere fraction of the check of I received. Most of the damage is broken lenses, dings in fenders, bumpers, tailgate, etc. Nothing really extensive, it essentially tweaked every panel on the truck (minus doors). I would post pics, but it was so hard to tell from pics that it would be a waste of bandwidth.

Now it's time to do the stuff I've been wanting to do for years to my truck. So here's the list:

    1) ARB Bull Bar Bumper
    2) Warn M8000 Winch
    3) Magnaflow Catback Exhaust (P/N: 15811)
    4) An additional KC Hilite light for the Bullbar (I already have 2)
    5) Warn Winch Kit Bag
    6) Toytec Coilovers with HD Coils (Silver color option) - I will adjust to about 1.75" to 2"
    7) 1.5" Rear AAL from Wheeler's Off-Road
    8) Xenon Headlight Conversion from Slimcubby on the currently active GB
    9) Line-X my bed
    10) Build custom rear bumper. My friend and I are going to build a custom rear bumper. We are going to start with a 6" x 6" x 0.1875" wall square tubing. We are going to cut and weld on plates to build a plate bumper. We figured it would be easier to start with a hot-rolled tube since we don't have any pre-made jigs or fixtures. I'm also replacing my Reese OEM Toyota receiver hitch. This particular hitch bolts to the frame and bumper. I'll build the new bumper to accommodate this feature.

My grill was slightly creased (just the chrome coating), so I plasti-dipped my grill and high glossed my emblem.

    Grille_aa656b05d1840e26a7d451456eb58582d232993d.jpg

I should have the truck back next week. I should have all my toys in next week sometime as well. I figure the weekend of the 17th I should be ready to have an all weekend wrench-a-thon. I'll post pics when I'm done.

One question, will I need to extend any of my brake lines?

I argued it. Since the truck is a 2003 with 186,000 on the ticker, they weren't willing to give me crap.

Suffice it to say, I'm buying all of that and still pocketing several thousand dollars. I'll "cut my losses." Besides, I'll keep this truck for years if nothing more than a farm truck.

    Long story.

His insurance was unwilling to give me a fair value for the damage. Therefore, I elected to use my collision coverage through my insurance. In the end, my insurance paid me (including my deductible thousands more than his would have). My agent informed me that they would subjugate his insurance.

When his insurance company repays mine, mine would repay me my deductible. According to the agent, although I couldn't get a nickel more out of his insurance company, it isn't a big deal between insurance companies. The way I understood, they would get reimbursed at the snap of their fingers.

    We'll see.

    Is that a "sit-by-and-watch-him-screw-this-up" or more of a "just-sit-by-and-watch?"

I don't think that will be the case. Several reasons why:

    1) The quote I got was from an "approved" shop that works closely with the insurance company. I'm pocketing a lot because most shops tend to want to replace everything that is bent. I have a friend that builds a lot of custom cars and is really good at body work and he's giving me a great deal.

    2) They are subjugating the other driver's insurance company. It should be a wash as far as they are concerned.

I'm not wanting anything "extra" nor am I out to screw them.

    A) I'm getting enough money to get it repaired by a professional shop, but not opting for that. If they caused "x" amount of damage, they owe that to me whether I repair it or not.

    B) They offered me $1000 above my medical costs (head contusion, concussion, blah blah blah) for good measure I guess. I didn't ask for it, they offered it.

    C) They are paying for my 2 days off of work.

It was about a $1600 difference (< 30% difference) and truthfully I'm not sure that is anything more than noise in the insurance industry.

    Regardless, thanks and I'm pumped.

I have done all the hi-pro mods for a life time, since I got this truck at a great price, I will be happy with showroom new.
well lets see if i have a reason to be angry and little regard for a racket.
in early 2001 I set a nice long term lease on my house in salisbury nc because on the 1st of april I was moving to Chicago to start a new job.
the first weekend of march, it was a nice early sunday, i did some outside work, and ran a few errands, and stopped by a friends home he was restoring, to see how it was going, and he was busy and had sprained his back, and asked me if i could kill a hour and ride to Lowes with him to get wood and some drywood. sure, coming back he was on rant about contractors and he ran a stop sign and pulled right out in front of a ford tempo going 45mph he had a airbag, it was a old nissan villiger, i did not, just seatbelt. now in those days I was real stout, and I had yelled at him because i knew we were going to crash, after we all came to a stop, I could not breath, peoiod, could not get out of van, we were lucky a police car was very near and saw the wreck. the officer called to medical, saw that ken was ok and not going anywhere, and the other car was quiet, and he helped me struggle out. he laid me down and said the the 3pt belt, i could have a punctured lung. they got me to hospital, i was there most of day and night, ran alot of test, and I had a major blood bruise accross 75% of my chest. all 12 ribs were bruised. now for almost 3 months, I could not pick up anything, sleep on my stomach. I could not screw. if you cant take a deep breath its hard to start screwing. and I have bad hayfever. sneezing was painful. and the good part. they also told me that this delay was my fault because i moved to chicago, even though I explained in writing to them many times, the transfer of records between chicago and salisbury was too much
I had to drain some reserves and pay for alot of the moving I was going to do myself. delay my start at work, so I will start in top shape, and wondering if this is going to damage my relationship with my new employer.
I fillled out all the state farm paperwork, made copies, 11,200.00 hospital
800.00 ambulance. 2800.00 post accident medical. 3000.00 extra for my move.
after 3 month they called me back and went over everything, very nice. and then asked me why I call for a ambulance? I did not. the police called for it. did u tell him to. what did they do to you in hospital? and did you reguest the test? No I did not request anything, I was in too much pain and was just trying to breath. she said thank you and would hear from them soon.
2 months later, they offered me a check for 1000.00 to settle. Now I have not even giving them a figure for my pain and trouble I have been through because of a idiot. with me traveling alot for work, this went on some nice some not so nice for almost 2 years. I was coming close to the statue of limitations, so I had to hire a lawyer and sue my soon to be x friend.
this is the game they play
they delayed until the day before the court date and then wanted to settle, by this time I said fuck you. I want my say in court, and with my job I was allready in high point for the furniture show. now my assist in chicago was sending me my mail since i was gone for so long, sure enough another settlement offer.
1500.00 but one differance, if i wanted to deline their offer, i had to sign my name on several doc. and then give a reason why, and they had to be mailed and received by them, before the court date they would then consider the offer accepted whether i cashed it or not. showed it to lawyer, he called it shitty, and stupid. well right before court started, they settled. in NC you are entitled to 2 and a half times medical bills for pain and suffering. compensation for disrupting life and livelihood. and i am sorry but after all the time lost, and the way they had treated me and at the time of the wreck i had to health insurance, they made me feel that those expenses were my fault then.... damage to my credit history. and my time. this is the big game some play. delay, delay, delay, maybe the claim will go away. if they would have treated me with respect i would have done the same. the police officer told me at the hospital for my records that he wrote ken 2 tickets, what he would not get out of.
failure to yield right of way, and running stop sign.

I was hoping something similar would happen to my truck so I could get new plate bumpers, but instead my truck was totaled lol

also in alot of states they owe you for deprication of your truck because of the wreck that was not your fauld. it sucks but carfax will pick this up and it does shave off some of the value of your truck. and hey, you were driving safe, someone else hit you.

    Update:

The truck is still at my buddy's garage getting the body work done. He said he would be finished Wednesday. I'll post pics when I get it back.

Parts are starting to roll in. My first parts were some factory parts from Conicelli Toyota (www.partznet.com - the best prices on factory parts I've been able to find).

Even though my Tacoma is an 03, I love the new Tacoma badges from the 2nd gen. So I ordered 3 "Tacoma" badges. I'm painting them gloss black. I'm taking off all of the other emblems from the factory and adding the new ones. Here's a comparison of factory chrome versus gloss black:
