Stupid mileage calculation from a noob

Hello all. I am looking for the bext way to calculate mileage. I looked for sticky's and searched forums, but did not find a calculation. So the tank is 17.5 gallon capacity in the manual.

If I fill it all the way up (until the deispensing nozzle will give no more), it seems that will be more than 17.5 gallons? Should I then let it run down past the E to check for total mileage per completely filled tank? (I know that is not good for fuel injection).

So I am currently using both trip meters. Trip A was set right after I filled it to the brim. Trip B is set right as the needle was directly on on the F. I am going to check trip B as soon as the needle is dead on the half tank mark.

Is the the right way, or can you share some insight? I know there is no street way to be 100% accurate. Just looking for the best way to check fuel efficiently.

The tank is 21 gallons

Fill the tank , set your trip odometer to zero , next time you fill up divide the miles travelled by the amount of gas used to re-fill

 

If you have a smart phone, sign up for Fuelly and enter the fuel up info every time you fill.

You don't need an application of any type , just a calculator , it's not that hard

Actually , you don't even need a calculator , do they teach long division in school anymore ?

 

I'm a product of the California public education system. 2+2 requires a calculator.

 

We live in the dark ages.

Really, we do want to get them. If one gets one then the rest want's/expects one too. (wife and step-daughter) That's $90 extra a month. Can't really afford that right now, especially with a child on the way. Besides that, we're under contract until the end of the year anyway.

 

What I do is fill the tank to Full, reset one trip meter and drive until half the tank is gone. Then I go fill up and divide the miles on the trip, by how many gallons went in the tank. Then I fill the tank up and repeat the process five times, then average it out.

So far I'm getting 17 MPG (that's rounded up)

 

Why the half tank? I run mine down and fill up. Then divide miles driven by gals pumped. No damn smartphone req'd!

+1 to this, fill up (record initial mileage) next time you fill up subtract recorded mileage from current mileage and divide by the number of gallons on the pump you just filled with.

Now if you have oversized tires and never had your speedo adjusted the compensation calculation is a little more intricate

 

Try to fill at the same pump facing the same way as well. You can be off by a couple gallons if you fill up facing downhill and then fill up facing uphill the next time. I average about 17.5 MPG, with 80% of my miles going 75 mph on hilly interstate on 265/75/16 Hankook ATMs. I usually refuel at about 1/4 tank, getting around 265 miles on around 15 gallons.

 

is this a trick thread?

i learned the way OZ does it when i was a wee child. neither one of my parents could care less about fuel mileage. i was a dork and would figure it out on my own as a very young child. fuel was 80 cents a gallon so nobody cared.

 

Thanks gang. One more question, do you top it off till the gas is coming out of the inlet, or just a couple of squeezes after the main full shut off of the nozzle? Is this considered 21 gallons, or slightly more because of the feeder tube to the tank? I would think this would throw off any recorded mileage. Not sure.

Track not only fuel, but makes it convenient for maintenance, tire/brake life, etc.
