Failed Freeze plug help

Well truck has been running perfect until it started smoking... The header is getting splashed with oil so I realized that the oil was coming from inside the bellhousing so I pulled the transmission thinking it was the rear main seal but I found it very doubtful since I just replaced it during a recent build.... come to find out it's the freeze plug. Does anyone know where I can find that specific freeze plug? It's not the ones that are on the side of the motor... the one that failed sits behind the flywheel. If you look right above where the crank would go there is a little freeze plug (aka expansion plug and core plug) about the size of a nickel there.... does anyone know where I can find that plug?? I have looked everywhere online but no luck...

 

links or any info would be greatly appreciated. even if it's a set that I have to buy...

It seems that toyota warranty will pay to replace the block if that happens under the warranty period. Based on that, they do not have the part separately.

Since you are clearly off warranty, I'd advise measuring the bore and getting a new expansion plug from an auto parts supplier, they're available generically in a wide range of sizes. If you are unsure on any of the above, take the block to a good engine rebuilder machine shop and they'd be able to help you out in a heatbeat. The above thread suggests it might be a 20mm plug, but don't go off just that.

 

Could that be the cam plug? If so, it wouldn't be an expansion plug and it would explain why it was oil that came out...

 

that sure sounds like the problem.... fml... guess i'll go hunting for one...

?... that's still an expansion plug... they aren't made for just coolant... I'll just swing by the local parts store and find one... i'll just have to find a universal one

 

That's lame that Toyota can't help you, but you should be able to measure the size and go to NAPA and get one ordered. Or a machine shop, as others have suggested. It's not rocket science, just a plug.

I worked for Kragen for awhile, and for a NAPA store also. Unless things have changed NAPA can get damn near anything that the dealerships don't have an exclusive on. The counter guys just need to know where to look. Kragen had all the same books for engine parts, but we couldn't get hardly anything ordered into the store. The Kragen supply system just didn't work well. I don't know if that holds true for the other large chains like OReily and Autozone.
