The only reason I use synthetic oil in my truck is because it sits outside in the cold all winter and synthetics flow better at start up. I use to own a 1995 Ford F150 and I remember one very cold morning when I started it up the oil pressure guage read 0 for about 4-5 seconds. That night I changed the oil to Mobil 1 and the next morning I had instant oil pressure readings. I know it's not scientific, but that's enough evidence for me.

New to Tacoma, but not to Pennziol Platinum...for those who wonder, check bobistheoilguy.com...has real good UOA's...and check the technical data sheet too...better than M1 for cold starts.

Amsoil all the way. By far the best stuff ive ever put in a vehicle. They dont sell their stuff in most stores but go to the website and check out there stuff. Its a bit more costly but has done great for me.

Cant beat Amsoil ... been using it for the past 10 years. The best thing about it is you dont have to change your oil for 25,000 miles or one year whichever comes first.

Also use Amsoil in our Super Comp Dragster and the ET picked up 2 tenth in the 1/4 from 8.03 to 7.83. A significant change in duration between engine rebuilds compared to the previous Castrol Syntec/Mobil 1.

I use Mobil 1. Advance Auto parts runs a special where you get 5 quarts and a Mobil 1 filter for $29.99. Seems good to me.

I get free oil changes for life from my dealer :)
it was in the deal when I bought it.

so does running synthetic quiet down the tick?
I figure I could deal with a tick considering the $$ im saving.

LBtaco, thats not a bad deal , free oil changes , plus it will get them real familar with your truck.
Our dealers her in the chilly northeast don't do that. They think they are giving you a deal when they knock a couple of bucks off the overal cost.

i just switched to synthetic my last oil change. i seem to get about 1 extra mile per gallon bringing my avg to 18 something mpg.

the oil change guy also said that synthetic oil can go twice as long without being changed so i can go 6,000 miles per oil change. but the manual says the tacoma needs an oil change every 5,000. does that mean i can go 10,000 miles before needing to change the oil?

I would change it every 6 months or 5000 miles to keep Toyota happy. You don't want them giving you any flack if you have a warranty issue.

Its a known fact that Toyota wants you to return to the shop for oil changes and other business, hence the "maint light" going off at 5K. Most engineers and mechanics I have spoken to all agree that for most kinds of driving you can extend the mileage factor. I doubt if you could double the mileage.
Lets say you lease a Toyota, it would benefit Toyota to have the oil and other maint done sooner than necessary, as Toyota would benefit from it. Its also true that if you bought a lease car from the lot, you also would know you were getting a vehicle that had be properly maintained. In reality Toyota is looking out for themselves.

Personally, I use the figure of 6000-6500 for my vehicles and after 5000, I watch the color of the oil , as I like to change it just as it gets dirty. I think I have used only 1/8-1/4 of a quart during my oil changes.
I like to change my own oil, like most TW members(who by the way, often change their oil more frequently) I don't usually drive more than 12500 per year and I plan my changes in the spring and fall when the weather is good, as I don't have a garage. In fact I am due for a change around April 1st.
I am not sure what Toyota would say with respect to the warranty about changing the oil at 10K , probably they would not be happy with that.

I have used regular Penzoil dino and Fram filters on my last 4 vehicles. Never had an engine issue to speak of. Cost was $15 for everything.

I plan to switch to synthetic for the new Tacoma but will probably buy on cost (M1, PP, RP...I'm sure they all work well enough for me). Not sure about the filter...I'll have to see what Wally-World carries.

For the dirt bike, I'll stay with Rotella T 15w-40. Can't beat the price and performance of this stuff. Coast to coast truckers use it so I trust it in my bike.

Veccster.our wally world has Mobil 1 filters every now and them and like a lot of things you cannot always count on the buyers at WW. When I go to by Mobil 1, for both our cars I usually buy enough to last the year, as they are often out of the 5 gallon container in the weight I need.
I have been using the standard Taco oil filter from my local dealer, in my opinion certainly better than Fram's and some others. One of our local auto parts stores carries Mobil filters at $12. A bit much.
