Ok so i call a local dealer for tires and they say i cant run 285\65-18? they said that its to big for my truck and that 10ply wont work with a tacoma because its a light truck? Ive read about many of you all running the 285\65 and now this LADY is telling me i cant run anything bigger than 265? i told her with a lift and she said nope still cant? is this stupid or was she right? Highly doubt it is though

    A few bolts are different.
she is half way right. you can make it work with a 3" lift and new wheels with a 4.5" back spacing. If you dont want to get new wheels you will need a set of spidertrax wheel spacers so the tires will not rub the uca's. In both cases some trimming will be needed.

Sounds like you might want to call around to other places. I went to one place to do my tires after I got the lift on and about two weeks later I go by there to ask them what the hell is going on and they say, oh hey, we have 3 of your rims. Looks like it'll take us about 3 more weeks to get the other rim from so-cal. So I went somewhere else for a better price and way better service. Oh and I have a 3-1 leveling kit and I'm running 285's

I would forget about that place all together if they say you cant put those tires on there after they do the lift, sounds like they dont know there a$$ from their elbow.

Like stillfly199 said, I also have a 3" lift and i'm running 285's with wheel spacers on the stockers just fine.

    18x9's will also fit

Edit: and there are probably hundreds of us here with terra grapplers

I'm running BF GOODRICH's on my truck, 285/70/17 I believe, and I had to do a little trimming to the fenders, no spacers (that I know of at least). They also told me that I couldnt run 16's on my truck because they wouldnt clear the brake caliper or something. I dont know why but it seems like a lot of people have trouble with tires and wheels.

Don't believe anything you read....even if its a man. (sorry, had to say it :p)

Dealers don't care about what works and what doesn't. They're always gonna feed you crap unless you're installing a Toyota/TRD item and its installed by a Toyota tech.

Everything else....they don't wanna be held responsible for. She's being PAID to tell you NO.

I was just drving by my toyota dealership and noticed they took a new truck and through a revtek 3" kit on it and mounted 285/60/18's on it with 5.71 backspace wheels... not sure how they got that on there but looks to me like it would rub on the uca for sure, its damn close.... they are running terra grappler at's..... I Think you will be fine with that bcakspace.. I am looking at running the same thing you are looking at too. I have 17x9 kmc and will be putting some terra's on hopefully in the next two weeks. I am waiting for my lift parts to come in. I went with the ARB ome setup.

Even worse.... a guy at a tire dealer knows even less about our trucks than the dealership does. They're also gonna tell you NO (or I don't know) - so they're not held responsible.

I've done many 'custom' applications on vehicles and needed parts. Going into some of the national auto parts stores.... I get sooo sick and tired of them saying "I don't have that" or "It won't fit".

So instead...I just tell them.."It's a custom application" and "Don't worry about it"

These days you're far better off researching on TW (and other forums) and getting your answers and not even bother asking anyone else.
