I just bought my truck a month ago and love it. I have the TRD "Rugged Trail" off road package and I don't understand why they would put this package on a truck without 4X4. You would think that since it is set up with an off road package, that it would be 4X4. Any thoughts?

I thought they do make a Rugged Trail with 4x4, guess you got the Prerunner. makes sence for your area, not much snow and ice in Florence SC

You don't need 4x4 to Off Road. There are many 4x2 that are very capable of Off Road on this forum. You get the Off Road suspension and the Locker with the TRD Off Road packages. With your Rugged Trail you get black fenders and black Baja Wheels as well.

They do make it in both 4x2 and 4x4....I think the question was, why put a Off Road package on a 2wd truck...2wd people will soon chime in and show you some awesome off road pictures with their PreRunners.

Yes, it is the PreRunner and you are right, we don't get much ice and snow, but we do get mud. It just seems weird to me kinda like having a 4 cylinder Mustang.

4X4 wasn't/isn't a big deal to me. I bought the truck for its reputation, the way it looked and the deal was way too sweet to pass it up. I wasn't even planning on buying a new truck until September when I got it. I have never had the opportunity to do any off roading with the vehicles I have had in the past and thought it would be fun to try some now that I have a truck to do it with. I just thought if it was set up for off road, it would also be 4X4, but as sdtree03 mentioned above, it doesn't have to be 4X4 to off road, then it works for what I need out of it.

Cool. you just seemed a little disapointed in your post. Like you were Ill informed or something. Your Prerunner is very capable, trust me.

I'm not disappointed at all with the truck. It would have been a bonus to have the 4x4, but it was not enough to break the deal. Truthfully, I would rather have a longer bed than have the 4x4. That is the only thing I regret simply because the motorcycle won't fit in the back.

A 2wd truck will get through more shit than a 4x4 in 2wd if it makes you feel any better :)
Of course when you get stuck in 2wd you're stuck the 4x4 guy still has a little trick up his sleeve.

I NEVER see Prerunners around here (western PA). Don't see many 2wd trucks of any brand for that matter. With hills and snow, you need the 4wd capabilities.

It's weird to me that you would even buy a 2wd but I have never lived in warmer climates without hills.

Hell, I pulled off the road into a field yesterday to take a picture and couldn't pull back out - spun and spun. I could've worked at it and backed up a bit to get more of a run but instead I turned the knob and creeped out of there.

If I only had 1 truck, It would be a 4x4, no doubt. As I have a few other 4x's, the Prerunner was perfect (and still is) for what I need it for.

Because a 4wd truck has more weight and resistance in the front end than a 2wd truck.
Same reason a 4x4 gets worse mileage. This should be common knowledge....

Resistance and extra weight don't affect off road traction? Really?
I'm the one who doesn't know "WTF" I'm talking about?
    I must have been mistaken...
