Racking up miles quick, maintenance/preventative measures...

Hey everyone. Im new on TW and I hope im not starting a burnt out thread. Basically though I am close to hitting 100k on the odometer. My truck will be seeing plenty of miles to come and I wanted some input on service or maintenance to parts. I know there is a diagnostic that repair shops can run... would that apply to tacos or even tell me much? But I figured before I did that I would see if anyone here had ideas. Im kind of looking for the "wouldnt hurt" ideas or things that you have seen, ranging from fuel pumps to spark plugs to shocks.

Appreciate any advice.

 

At 100k you'll need to do a timing belt replacement and it's a good idea to replace the water pump and hoses while you've got everything apart or are paying the labor to have everything done because you have to remove everything anyway. Maybe do a brake job and repack/replace bearings and grease down everything. Replace fluids from the trans and differential.

Cool, thanks. Is a timing belt going to be the most expensive and/or important? The thermostat is relative to what part of the engine? I just need to find the right place to bring it and they should be able to tell me the same things. Wish I knew about these things!

 

It's pretty important but the pump will be the most costly at around $2-300 iirc it isn't really something you want to skimp on. The thermostat tells the computer what temp the motor is at so that it can run a lower idle when it is warm and save gas, basically.

 

Sounds like you are going to have a place do the work for you. If you go independent garage (non dealer) then research well into their experience and service performance.

I was quoted around $650 from local dealers here to do the water pump and timing belt. Call around if you have dealer do it as different dealers may have different prices. Watch for specials too. That quote is also just to do the timing belt and water pump. If you need any pulleys, seals etc. then that is more. If you have them do things like put new hoses on then that should just cost you the price of the part as they have to reinstall a hose anyway so does not matter if old or new.

Apart from things already listed, basic maintenance things are always good, air filter, pcv valve (often forgotten, but if stopped up can create oil leaks), radiator cap (keeps pressure on system), grease chassis.

You may as well have your ball joints, tie rods, control arms, sway bar bushings, rack bushings etc. checked.

Make sure to get a wheel alignment too and keep the truck aligned.
