Hmm that should have been good. Maybe previous owner screwed something up. I use 4x4 very often. (New England here) In winter my truck runs in 4x4 every day for few miles, but I dont get any metal shavings. I am also not easy on 4x4 (spent few hours on Sunday making donuts in 4x4 :D ) I Replace oil every 20K or so. I think previous owner screwed up something just keep checking oil to make sure diff is filled and you should be fine.

Congrats OP on your good fortune of having the defective diff replaced under warranty. May the new diff last for infinity. :)

Just a monthly bump for situational awareness. If that tell tale spot of fluid hadn't showed up on my garage floor when it did...I'd have been paying Toyota $2000 instead of them replacing the front diff under warranty.

Yeah, that would have been me. Maybe it's just bad luck to have anything resembling a Moose in your screen name?:D Or maybe it just hits us older folks.

    Thread revival I know.

I didn't do the front diff fluid change at 20K after replacement.

I changed my rear diff fluid at 75K (approximately 30K from my initial fluid change on it). The magnet was practically clean except some very fine residual (sand like and very small amount), that I decided to go with 30K change interval on the diffs.

A couple weeks ago, at 92K on the odo, I changed all the driveline fluids, both Diffs (align them to same mileage), Tcase, and Manual Trans.

Front diff magnet had the same very fine residual on it that I noted on my rear diff magnet at 75K. The rear diff magnet had practically nothing on it and the fluid was still almost new looking.

So I'm going with 30K fluid change interval on the diffs and every other time (60K) I'll do the Tcase and Manual Trans as well.

Just thought I'd do a little follow up on this.

Or maybe it's slow at work and this gave me something to do. :notsure:
