Hearing Protection/ Ammo Cans/ Gun cases etc.

Hey TW Gun gurus,

As you may know from my other thread, I am buying a Handgun soon, and I was curious about a couple things.

What do you have in your range bag for shooting?

What kind of hearing protection do you use?

What do you keep your ammo in at home? Gun safe? "ammo can"?

What do you keep your gun in? A gun rug (I think they are called)? A pelican case?

If you don't mind posting some pics that would be great too. I am trying to get as prepared as possible for my first handgun. Thanks!

my range bag:
- headset (earmuff type)
- pack of orange foam earplugs
- molded earplugs
- shooting glasses
- spare shooting glasses
- can of breakfree CLP lube
- boresnake for 9mm
- boresnake for .45ACP
- cotton rag
- mini binoculars
- paper targets
- extra magazines
- ammo (in factory packaging)
- multi-tool
- thin gloves (for really cold day)

hearing protection:
(i seem to rotate between the three types mentioned in my range bag contents)

storage:
- long guns and extra handguns in safe
- two handguns "stashed" loaded (they stay holstered for safety, one is on me though while awake), extra loaded mags

ammo:
- storing inside a conditioned area (i.e inside your home) is just fine, keep in factory boxes, etc...
- some folks like to buy mil surplus ammo cans that totally seal out the elements, ..they'll put dessicant packs in to absorb moisture already present before closing the lid... this is overkill if it's going to stay in the air conditioned part of your house,... but ammo cans do make handy transport to/from the range..

...you mentioned gun rug and pelican case
- i'd recommend NOT storing inside the factory case or pelican case, as the foam innards can retain moisture and affect the finish over time...
- i like "bore stores", they are silicone impregnated "gun rugs", ...very nice... but i wouldn't recommend storing fully loaded in these as there's nothing hard covering the trigger...

 

Ammo planned for the session, eyes and ears, silicon cloth, magazines, couple of basic tools.

Peltor amplified. These allow you to hear normally, but kick in and limit max volume. I'll sometimes double these up with foam plugs.

Ammo cans in the bottom of the closet.

At home or transport?
At home, long guns and "spare" handguns in the safe. Home defense handguns "available" (Glock-26, RIA 1911, wife's 92FS, and

$13 SP101 CRL "Sparkle" Cleaner and Stain Remover - 8 oz. Bottle

SP101 .357).
HD handguns are condition-zero (loaded, chambered, safety off).

Transport, California requires unloaded, concealed locked for handguns and unloaded for long guns.
Magazines remain loaded, guns are in locking cases.
Long guns in zippered field bags.

That reminds me.. I need to pick up a few more .50cal ammo cans.

craigslist. or since you are in CA you can checkout www.calguns.net some of the military guys have them for sale in the FS section. if you decide to join that forum it asks you for your reference my screen name there is secret.asian.man

 

Calguns...... love it! Traded, sold, or bought at least 4 guns there not counting uppers, optics, etc.

I'm kauaibuilt over there as well.

 

So is that a open invetation to use you as a refrence for cal guns? I'm in the same boat as op.

If you are shooting indoors or under a roofed range, get 30db muffs.
For those of you lucky enough to live in an area that doesn't rain 9 months out of 12, you can get by with 24-26db muffs.
Range bag:

Hoppes #9 and Boresnake
Breakdown cleaning rod (clear stuck cases, check for lodged bullet if a round squibs)
Small screwdriver kit (the kind in the plastic box with bits that fit on a driver--incl allen and Torx)
small adhesive bullseyes
Shop rag and microfiber wipe for optics
Eye protection (oldskool Oakley M-frames with the giant persimmon lenses)
Fat sharpie, fine sharpie

yeah i've seen you around. i had a feeling that was you too. i just never bothered to ask lol

 

Local milsurp/"prepper" shops, if I don't mind them being pretty beaten up.
A couple of local guys usually have some available for a few bucks more than the milsurp places and they're in better condition, normally repainted and ready to stencil (or paint-marker pen, I'm too lazy to stencil).

What is this about referrals? Been a while since I joined so maybe its a new thing?

As far as CGF - I just made my second donation in a year or so because of the LA LTC filing - gotta LOVE those guys!

 

All the referrals do is give you a brownie point in your user profile.

I'll be doing another $300 toward SBDO county next week.
CGF is my regular annual spring charitable contribution... it's just my way of saying "Fuck you" to Obama, Barbara, and Dianne by taking some of the money that they allowed me to keep and putting it into something that they despise.

I still kick $200 or $300 into the Totally Kids special needs center over in Loma Linda, but I don't deduct it from my taxes since I don't like being too close to any of the limits that trigger audit flags ($500+, or just under $500 will trip a flag since $500 is where you need special filing forms).
