The 2-stroke thread

In that year I would go with the CR. Weight savings on the aluminum frame is not that much though (2002 Cr = 213lbs - 2002 yz = 215lbs). What kind of riding do you do? Those are two completely different styles of motor and I would make my choice depending on what kind of riding its for

I'm not sure what type of riding I'll be doing yet. I'm looking for an all around bike. But the 2 bikes I'm looking at specifically is a 2000 cr250r low miles but not super clean for $1800. Or a 2003 yz250 more hours but overall a well kept bike. He is asking for $2400 but I'm hoping to get him down to $1900-2000

Are they both green sticker? I am guessing you are in san jose, ca? My friend has the same year honda. Nice bike to ride. Never been a fan of yamaha ergonomics. They feel like the front end is really low in comparison.

 

Yes I'm in san jose.

The yamaha is red sticker. But I'm not too worried about stickers. I haven't ridden the yamaha yet. Hopefully this week.

 

If you ride track it's not important but the rangers down here in socal do care. I like the power on that engine, coupled with an fmf gnarly pipe it has lots if low end.

 

^This. The YZ has a better "all around" motor for most stuff. The CR is going to have more top end but the low end blows. If your skilled enough to keep it on the pipe you may like the CR, but for most people the YZ motor is much smoother and more tame-able

I just re-read it all and noticed the difference in years. A 2003 YZ is better than a 2000 CR hands down. The CR's had a lot of problems getting the aluminum frames dialed in and not too harsh. They made huge changes in 2002 and I would steer away from anything before that IMO. If your not jumping big supercross jumps your never going to notice the steel frame

 

I like the Yamaha's engine alot more, just more grunt down low and has a better power spread Imo. If you going to trail ride more I would go yz but if its more track it doesn't matter either way just what ever is a better deal/ better condition. One thing about the yz250 is that its engine is unchanged and its hasn't been changed since 05 really. For instance I could take a 02 yz250 and as I want a lighter and newer looking bike I can swap parts on very very easily. Ive seen people swap to aluminium frames from steels ones, old suspension to the new sss from yamaha, the old swing arm to the new 4 stroke swing arm(weight savings was around 3-4#s I think), UFO plastics just came out with a new plastic kit to look like a new bike. IMO I beleive the yz is a better bike just because of the support it receives from the aftermarket community. Heck a guy named Eric gorr will even bore it out to a 295 to make it just as fast as a 450, Ive also seen guys swap over(bolt in for the most part) wr426 gears into the 295 and have a very beast bike with long gears.



Anyways I do love my 13yr old bike, it weighs right around 200 wet and handles great with a revavle.

 

That 03 looks like it has new forks on it 05+, I would ask the seller to double check that though.

 

steel FTW! easier to work on the carb and just as light in KTM's case. not too sure about the yz's though.

Here is the only 2-stroke I own at the moment. It's a 17ft Key West 1720 Sportsman with a 2-stroke Yamaha 90hp on the back. We want to bump it up to a 125 which will max out the power limit on the boat but make it a little better for wake boarding and water skiing with but I really want a flat bottom boat.

 

Got the 144 together, its awesome.

 

hey guys, new member here...not a motorcycle but these are my 2 strokes. both are direct injection Etecs. LOVE THE ETEC! superior gas mileage. easier to maintain. much easier to off season store. much better power to weight. better warranties (3 yr vs 1 yr on the sled and 5 yr vs 3 yr on the boat).
