Thule, but it only holds 450# which ain't jack shit to have up over cab high in the air from what I hear. :D But it's more than I plan on having up there. 2 60# kayaks or some surfboards or a handful of pipe or a ladder would be about it. I'm thinkin 450# or more would crush the top of the bed and break the bedrail mountings and make the truck top heavy as hell but I could be wrong. If I needed to haul the weight limit of the truck I would be putting it down in the bed but that's just me tho.

I was admiring another members "rack" last night and he told me it was a Rack-it. Their site is lacking so I called one of their vendors today. Their headache rack offers a 16" long leg that is kept in place by threaded blocks of steel in the rail system. You have to specify it's for a Tacoma and they will build it accordingly. Problem is shipping and lead time for me. They are literally across country.

    http://rackittruckracks.com/headacheracks/universalracks.html
    http://rackittruckracks.com/headacheracks/truckspecificracks.html

Here's also a good site for off name bed racks http://www.usrack.com/products_truck_racks_toyota.php

I was driving this today full of tall glass through Philly...I think my Tacoma will be fine :D
    [IMG]

BTW - Tracrac and Thule are the same company. Tracrac appeals to contractors and Thule the sportier weekend warriors. I'm not trashing Thule...it's engineered fine and I like the telescoping option, but I think it's overpriced and under capacity for my use's and budget.

FU hippy....what you gonna do in 2 months when your kayak is longer then your new POS Jeep  :puke:

cats out of the bag now fucker

The higher the weight capacity the longer it will last when I hit bounce off a tree

Less than half of the back of that truck and whatever is in it is up over cab height but can you shoot video of the glass truck being driven like the tacoma would be where the rack would be bounced off a tree? That would be cool to see.

Boss man wouldn't like that one bit especially since that rack I pictured is new. Our guys bounce the glass racks off enough cars as it is. I just got stuck driving the other day because a guy called out. 8'6" wide racks in the city blow. Last week we had a city buss take one out while it was parked...luckily it just ripped the mirrors off the A pillar.

What do you guys think about inflatable kayaks? Are there any decent options for a beginner?

holy sheeeet man... You would get a ticket in my state in seconds. I would have to say that it's horribly dangerous to drive like that.

I would buy a used plastic kayak for cheap to start with. IMO the only rubber inflatable boat I would get into is a Zodiak or similar.

I would avoid an inflatable personally. Especially if you will be in a river where the possibility for sticks or rocks to puncture the sides.

Nah, get plastic if you want cheap, or secondhand.
Inflatables seem a bit of niche, imho (convenient, though).
Try MEC, you're lucky to have 2 so close!

Thats what I was afraid of. I already have a kayak myself. WildernessSystems Pamlico 100, but some of my friends would like to join me this summer and we are looking at what options they have. They may just stick to renting for now.

Biggest advantage I see is obviously storage space and transporting which appeal to them since none of them owns a truck and have room to store it.

I will look at some used ones in local classifieds.

Yeah, MEC is a great store. Was there just last night to check out the new line of GHOST bikes. :D

I just grabbed a 13' Wilderness last night for my buddy at a fraction of the cost new so they are out there. He figures it will pay for itself in one season and save a ton of time sense he won't have to rent or drive to pick them up.

Tracrac 800# rack is on sale at Lowes for $299.00 (#270001) - thanks for the heads up Joe!!! :)

    http://www.lowes.com/pd_117754-2533...urrentURL=/pl__0__s?Ntt=truck+rack&facetInfo=

Still requires Tacoma mount kit w/toolbox mount (#41500) that Lowes doesn't carry, but at that price I could care less if I need to order that online.

This is it on a short bed

That looks REAL nice! I want to say a family friend has that now that I see it for his f250. He owns a construction/ roofing business and carries ladders around on it all the time.

After a morning cruise in a lake made by some beavers yesterday I added some features to my 2 cheap yaks that nicer ones have.

Added 2 rod holders to my 12', 1 holder for my 9', a drain plug for the 12', and both yaks got paddle holders...now I'm just waiting for the drain plug so I can put it in.

Yak Gear (http://www.yak-gear.com/) gives you stainless screws with nylock nuts and aluminum rivets..I chose to use the rivets. Some of them didn't break off like they are supposed to so I had to grind them down a little. I thinks thats because my rivet gun is a little worse for the wear.

Sweet! The one nice thing about the sit ins is adding stuff is so much easier. I bolted all my stuff from inside. Wouldnt be able to do that with a sit in

So how about this one guys? Pelican Quest 100. It is actually for $399 currently at the store. Comes with spray skirt, paddle, and some kind of car top carrier which I probably won't use. I can't find it on Pelicansports website...

I don't think that's a very good deal even at $400, certainly not at $500.

At my costco there is a 11.5ft kayak for 349 with paddle and maybe a life jacket? It is the same model I currently have except it's yellow with no rod holders.---Mine's the green one.

Is there a particular reason why you would not recommend that boat? That is currently the best deal I can get here. Unfortunately, everything is more expensive in Canada.
