Thanks. Sad truth is, I usually build my cars till I don't wanna drive them unless the weather is perfect, or there's a cruise/race/show. I love my Tacoma because I'm still thrilled about building it and I can drive that bitch hunting, fishing, hiking, etc....My Taco is all about practical (so far) which is where my other cars fall short.

How do you know this? I'm curious. I've read this no less than 100 times on TW. I'm finally just picking one and asking. How? Because rain drops sit static on the top of the scoop? My thinking was what happens on top of the scoop is being affected by the front most portion of the scoop, which happens to be closed off. A very flat wall, smashing thru the air at 75mph. That's going to make the air bounce off, up, and over. If that perfectly flat wall isn't crashing thru the air wouldn't that change the whole dynamics of it?

I've been reading this for years and I don't get it.

Then why would Toyota make it functional on the Hilux? Why isn't rainwater an issue in the open, functional Hilux scoop?
That's not a whole lot different than what's on my Tacoma. If somebody made a kit to do this:

Then I don't see why it wouldn't work the same as it does on the Hilux.

the hood scoop on the hilux is made to blow cooler air onto the inter cooler for the turbo. the intake still is on the passenger side.

What are you basing this on other than the fact that rain water doesn't collect there?

It seems there are a few people that keep saying it's in a negative pressure area... How do you know? Is there a release from toyota stating this? has somebody done some testing to confirm it?

Right now I tend to agree with Bryan139. Until the scoop is opened up and at least tried to make functional, it will never appear to be sucking air. It would be like trying to blow air into a cup, doesn't work so well.

You also have to be driving faster than you should be driving a Taco to have any "ram air" setup even make a difference.

I'm not arguing that it would have any performance benefits, because i doubt that it would.

The discussion is whether or not it would work. Which i believe it would if somebody took the time to do it. I just don't like that people keep saying it isn't possible, yet have no legitimate reason for that (that i have seen yet).

One other factor is the fact that the engine produces about 25 in. Hg of vacuum... even if there is a "low pressure zone" (which i dont think there will be) it will still be higher pressure than the engines vacuum pulses. And yes the vacuum varies but it only drops for a second on WOT.

Well luckily, the engine creates vacuum so if nothing else it'll suck ambient cool air, and make the scoop functional.

which sounds like it would work. theoretically. it would be like having the airbox just open and not hiding under the hood.

    he has a point.

At some point in time sicne 2005, several members here and on other forums have tried to make the scoop functional...there have been several members whove done real world tests as to whether or not the scoop is in a low pressure area...it's all been done and tried

All testing/products concluded that the time/effort/$$ put into it was for nothing other than the fact that they could say they opened the hood up

I wish I could still find the threads but they are long since buried due to the 234234242435 other threads every time someone buys a new truck with a scoop

Satoshi, debadged, rear view mirror bracket, tail gate hose clamps, trimmed mud flaps.
Just thinking out loud, and not sure if would make sense, but what about using one of the fog light housings for a CAI as a true ram air induction.

I cut some wires here. Added some wires there.
I'm not debating where the air goes other than the fact that air goes into the scoop. I know it's for an intercooler, the same as some diesel 4runners I've seen. The air went in their scoops too.

Again, I'm not debating the time/effort/or $$, just that fact that air does go in the scoop. It may not do anything for you once it's in there, but it goes in. It's not a "negative pressure" issue.

Such a hot topic that's been on going for over half a decade should have a sticky if there are 234234242435 other threads. Somebody had a great thread a long while back. If I remember correctly, dude had a red truck. Opened up the intake and everything, fabbed up new sheet metal ducts and the whole nine yards. That would have been a great candidate for a sticky. People could have just added to it. It doesn't stop repeat threads with 5100's or anything else, but at least it's a start.
