"Meguiars all wheel cleaner" (or similar) and a flexible wheel brush so you can clean the inside of the rim without taking the wheels off.

Yep, soap & water... I also wax my wheels and that makes for easy clean up.

Chrome is harder than steel and goes relatively unscathed from steel wool.

Most aluminum wheels are clearcoated (acrylic-urethane paint) which will gradually be removed by using steel wool.

If your aluminum wheels are simply polished aluminim and not clearcoated, steel wool doesn't do much harm except that they will not be as shiny as if they were polished with a high-quality polish.

Clearcoated wheels should be treated just like body panels as far as cleaning and protection goes.

You'll need a wheel cleaner to loosen that up.

Tried it. It didn't remove the grit. That's why I asked again.

Any pics? I am wondering if your wheels may be pitted... PA is known for using harsh road salt that eats away the clear coat. Anytime I have used the Meguiars, it has removed everything pretty easily.

In my State, they switched from road salt to something a little less harsh a few years back. It makes a big difference and still removes the ice from the roads.
