TRD Off Road or not...what does it really add?

Hey guys, well i've decided to get a 2nd gen 6cly Manual. Access cab. I Really want the TRD OFF road package...but what does it really come with? I love the look of it. But is there and real suspension difference aside from the shocks ( which i can buy after market ) and the tires (which i can get aftermarket) The locker is great, but i might use it 20 times in the life time of the truck....let me hear what you have to say! worth the $$

 

well youget the BFG rugged Fails whitch you will be replacing by 12,000 miles anways. the locker. electrical outlet. um the bilstein shocks.

 

With the Sport package, you also get the hood scoop. It's cosmetic but I think it looks nice and sets the truck apart from others.

You also get better bucket seats with a nicer fabric.

 

My reason for getting the TRD Off Road package are the seats and the locker. Everything else you can get aftermarket. Toyota Locker is very good from what I heard. You can get an aftermarket locker but I heard it is worth getting a Toyota one if you can. What is the difference in price?

 

TRD package adds money to Toyota's coffers. Make sure you do your part to keep the largest car manufacturer in the world afloat!

 

The locker is the main reason I got it. Plus, I probably won't do anything as far as suspension or wheels, I like the way it looks as is. I'll swap the tires for a set of BFG ATs at some point. Also, the 09 ORs get A-TRAC and other little gadgets.

 

I bought an sr5 and had the TSb done and changed the tires...its basically a TRD. THe only thing i wish i had was the outlet on the bed of the truck. THought i would hook up a george foreman after skiing/biking trips. Don't really need it as i just get out the gas grill though... don't waste your money on the TRD...just my $.02

 

progressive rate front coils as well. the locking diff is why i got mine.

 

Do the non TRD SR5s have the overhead console? I can't remember. What about the wheels? ORs and Sports get alloys, 16" and 17" respectfully. Seems all the others I looked at had steelies. Skid plates and tow hooks standard on 4X4's and Prerunners?

 

I'm just pulling for a Sport because it looks better and rides more to my liking than the Off Road.

 

I bought the Offraod b/c I live in the CO mountains, and live offroad...

I wanted the Locker, A-TRAC, DAC, Sport Seats, JBL Audio, the stiffer suspension, etc...

It was worth every penny in my opinion... But, I use it on a daily basis for what it was built for...

 

I have a non trd, non sr5, 4x4... it does not have the temp gauge/compass in the overhead console, I believe only TRD's have it.
I had 16" steel wheels, but I think SR5's come with alloy (someone else confirm/deny).
My 4x4 only has the front skid and no engine skid, I believe the SR5 non TRD is the same (?) and it does have the front tow hook along with the transport hook allowing for 2 recovery points on the front.
I have the TRD shocks due to the TSB.
I have 4x4 and no locker.

I vote for non trd and save the $$ for your own upgrades.

 

I say go for the TRD package. You will get your money back on the resale. If I am saving money and buying used, I am looking for little things like a locker, bed outlet, better seats, hood scoop, temp gauge, etc.

Just me and where I live but I would never buy a 2wd or non-TRD Tacoma. FWIW


On the other side...if money is very tight for you, don't over-extend yourself on this purchase. Food, housing and good credit are more important than the features mentioned above.

 

Yea I think I'm gonna stick with no TRD, I dont like the BF's that come on the TRD, I'd rather get the AT's anyway. I can replace the shocks with what I want. and Albeit the locker is very cool, I've owned numerous pickups and jeeps and with 4wd and have never needed a locker. Just cause I want it doesn't make it worth it. The cost is $3200 or right at $80 bucks a month for three years. That will pay for my gas for the month. Oh well.

 

i got the off road because i plan to get the supercharger, i know from past experience without having the ability to lock the real diff the right side tire has a tendancy to spin a lot. ill have to perfom the gray wire mod to allow me to lock it in 2wd mode so i can have a posi when i need it.
so the locker was the ONLY reason i got the off road verses the sport. well also the off road has a lot more off road buttons and gadgets. i like the idea of having every blank switch filled with a function rather than plastic blank.

 

Wow, $3200 difference is substantial! Didn't realize it was that much.

Got a color picked out yet?

 

The TRD OffRoad package adds a whole new level of Bad-Ass-ed-ness.

Sounds like a good choice. Its your $. I may have a few more goodies on my TRD Sport, but helped a buddy find a 09' AC 4x4 and after weighing the pros cons, he went with and SR5 #2 pkg and saved a couple grand over a TRD. It's great truck, has most of the important stuff.

btw Can't believe your going w/ a 6spd down there. Nice, there's another $1200 off. good luck.
