I drove to Ensenada and back through Tijuana (from San Diego) multiple times last year. It's not as bad as the media makes it out to be, especially if you're in touristy areas. You're nobody in Mexico. The cartels don't give a shit about you...again, especially in touristy areas. If you're flying, you definitely won't have any problems.

That being said, I would rather go to Hawaii, Jamaica, Barbados, Bahamas...pretty much anywhere along the lines of that. :p

There's just a bunch of scared white people on this site.

I wouldn't go to Mexico. If you've got the feeling to party with college kids then go to Panama City, FL I have family that have gone to Jamaica and loved it. I want to go to the Bahama's one day.

I am hispanic and been a few times. Its fun. as long as you stay in the areas where the resorts and stuff are you will be fine. If you don't speak spanish or don't look hispanic people will treat you like a tourist. Last time I wondered around at night alone because my buddy drank too much earlier and was good. But most people thought I was from Mexico City because I am light skinned but can get by with my spanish.

For everyone that say Jamacia. Fuck that! That place is sketchy as hell. you leave 1/4 of a mile from the resorts and its sketchy.

If you go to the Bahamas one one of my fravorites is St. Marrtin the Dutch Side is really laid back and the french side isn't half bad either. Grand Cayman is nice also

Been the the All the islands in HI Very nice as well. Maui have a little of everything

Well, just like anywhere else, the touristy areas of Jamaica are nice.

I live roughly half an hour away from one of, if not THE most dangerous Mexican cities (Juarez) and I would not recommend going. My friends an I used to go a ton, what with all the cheap booze an being able to walk to Mexico but its just not worth losing your life over. You guys may think I'm being a bit over the top but I have actually lost a friend to the violence in Mexico. Shits no joke right now

Thanks all for the input :D we're going with a large group of family, flying in to cancun. Been to Jamaica, didn't really care for it (we were asked by the guy who unloaded our bags from the bus that took us from the airport to the hotel if we wanted to buy some weed, before we got off the bus!) Bahamas was last time----nice. Floridas always cool but been there many times. One of my better-halfs coworkers just went to the riviera maya in Mexico and said it was fine. Thanks again all........

Dude, you are confusing "Bahama's" with "Caribbean"... St. Marteen is nice, VERY nice, and so is Barbados!

Personally, I don't like being "stationed" on a resort. I like to "meander" around, sort of speak, So I'd do Costa Rica or some place like that before Mexico. But you haven't lived until you've been to St. Johns...

as long as you fly in, you will be fine and have a great time.

DO NOT GO OUT AT NIGHT

my grand parents live in rocky point 6 months out of the year and they say its fine as long as you dont go out at night and your not by yourself.

they drive there too, but their rule is dont go out at night no matter what.

I've driven through Mexico several times the last few years...no problems.
Drove through to san felipe a couple times through the desert...once even picked up a few federalis in my truck bed and drove them down to san felipe...armed escort.

Wow the FUD is strong here.

Me and a bunch of friends went down to puerta del mar (k55 beach, a resort town) for presidents day weekend. It was an amazing trip and I would go back in a heartbeat.

This is even despite the fact that we got stopped and searched by federalès. Neither me or any of my friends in our car spoke any Spanish, and still the officers were extremely professional, spoke fluent English, and even told us about a carnival in Ensenada ("Girls, dancing, tequila", their words). They didn't want any bribes or anything. They told us to have a good time and sent us on our way.

This being said, use the obvious general precautions you would use when traveling to any foreign country. Make sure you have a travel permit if you leave the border zone (if you're driving), more info on this on the US state dept website. Only carry as much cash as you're willing to lose. I would go with a group of friends, not just your significant other. Always have your passport, and get maps (free if you're a AAA member). If you speak even just a little Spanish, do it, the locals will like you much more (even just a simple "buenos" or "gracias" is seen as a sign of respect, and will be appreciated).

The victims of cartel violence are rarely tourists. Those killed are almost always pawns in the ongoing drug war. That said, use your instincts and stay out of bad areas. If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer.

The gas is safe to put in your truck, and ethanol free. My truck actually ran so much better that I filled up again before crossing stateside. Bring a lot of bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth.

For me it's not so much being scared as managing risk. There are too many nice places where you don't have to concern yourself with drug cartels or corrupt law enforcement.

I've been around the world including Japan, the UK, the Netherlands, Portugal and South Africa. Mexico to me is just meh, why bother. I'd rather travel to somewhere in the US or Canada.

My aunty lives in Cancun and has said that it is a pretty nuts place although she blends in well and looks like a local with her really brown skin, I have a Mexican friend who's from there and went to visit his family in Cancun with his kids and they got robbed!

I wouldn't go especially with my kids, just my 2cents

when is the last time a tourist got hurt/shot/killed by a cartel in cancun or places like playa del carman? probably never. sure there's other issues to worry about when traveling abroad, but that's true whether you visit mexico or any other country.

my company has a plant in nogales mexico, (borders nogales, arizona) and being a border town, there is a fair share of stuff that goes on there. but nothing that would even stop me from traveling to the plant. been there numerous times.
